Formula 1 has confirmed its 2027 calendar, and while the championship remains at 24 races, the shape of the season is changing.
The campaign will begin in Bahrain from 12 – 14 March and finish in Abu Dhabi from 10 – 12 December, stretching across five continents and 22 countries. Before the opening race, Bahrain will also stage the championship’s only pre-season test from 24 – 27 February.
Portugal and Türkiye return to the calendar, but the most significant change concerns Saturdays. Formula 1 will increase its Sprint programme from six events to 10, the largest number since the format was introduced in 2021.
Portugal and Türkiye Are Back
Portugal returns in June, with Portimão hosting the ninth round of the season from 18 to 20 June. The race sits between Monaco and Great Britain on the European leg of the calendar.
Türkiye returns later in the year. Istanbul is scheduled for 1 – 3 October, slotting directly between Azerbaijan and Singapore as part of a tightly packed autumn sequence. The Turkish round remains subject to FIA circuit homologation.
Madrid will host the Spanish Grand Prix from 10 – 12 September, following Monza and preceding Baku.
Formula 1 Expands to 10 Sprint Weekends
The biggest structural change is the expansion of the Sprint calendar.
Bahrain, Australia, Japan, Monaco and Abu Dhabi will host their first Formula 1 Sprints in 2027. Montréal, Silverstone, Monza, São Paulo and Lusail complete the 10-event schedule.
Monaco is the standout addition. Putting a Sprint around one of Formula 1’s narrowest and least forgiving circuits gives drivers two competitive sessions before Sunday’s Grand Prix, with Sprint Qualifying on Friday and the Sprint preceding Grand Prix qualifying on Saturday.
The expansion is significant beyond the individual venues. Sprint racing will now appear at more than 40 percent of the 24 Grand Prix weekends, making the format a much larger part of the championship than in previous seasons. Formula 1 says total viewership across Sprint weekends has been 12 percent higher than at non- Sprint events since the format was introduced.
Bahrain Opens, Abu Dhabi Closes
The opening phase takes Formula 1 from Bahrain and Saudi Arabia to Australia, Japan and China before Miami and Canada. Monaco then leads into Portugal, Great Britain, Austria, Belgium and Hungary.
After the summer break, the championship resumes at Monza before moving through Madrid, Baku, Istanbul and Singapore. Austin and Mexico City follow in October, with São Paulo and Las Vegas preceding the final two rounds in Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
The number of Grands Prix may be unchanged, but 2027 will not simply repeat the previous Formula 1 calendar. Portugal and Türkiye are back, five venues will experience Sprint racing for the first time, and 10 Sprint weekends will make Saturday competition a more prominent part of the season than ever before.
