Defender Dakar: Street Legal 4×4 Derived From The 2026 Dakar Rally-Winning Defender D7X-R

The Defender Dakar is a special production run, street-legal 4x4 based on the 2026 Dakar Rally-winning Defender D7X-R, with a 4.4-litre V8 twin-turbo, rally-derived suspension, and 335-inch tyres.

What is the Defender Dakar?

Defender has unveiled a Design Preview Model of the Defender Dakar at The Quail by The Peninsula during Monterey Car Week in California. The design preview model is a street-legal derivative of the D7X-R competition model, which competes in the 2026 Dakar Rally.

The Defender Dakar features the same basic body structure, transmission, and drivetrain technology as the D7X-R model, which itself is built on the Defender OCTA. It blends the technical aspects of the competition vehicle with equipment suited for the roads.

How does the Defender Dakar differ from the Dakar rally car?

The Defender Dakar retains several technological aspects developed for the D7X-R. These include increased track width, ride height, and suspension technology.

Power is provided by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine. In the standard version, it is not limited by the competition rules that applied to the rally vehicle and provides a 635 PS power output, which is around 627 BHP. Peak torque output is listed at 750 Nm.

Other modifications include increased cooling and fitment of 35-inch tyres. These Advanced All-Terrain tyres are installed on new 20-inch forged wheels.

What suspension and off-road equipment does it have?

Defender Dakar is equipped with coil suspension with Bilstein Advanced Dampers designed specifically for motorsport. There are also two new driving modes: Dunes and Gravel, for different types of loose surface.

One more modification borrowed from the competition programme is the Flight Mode, a system designed for the D7X-R to control the vehicle’s behaviour during take-off and landing over rough ground.

There have also been changes made to the underbody protection. The specification includes an upgraded metal front undershield and improved underbody protection.

What are the distinctive features of the exterior of the Defender Dakar?

There are several body modifications in comparison with regular Defender cars. These are the modified wheel arches with visible rivets, roof-mounted light pods, a fixed metal roof and carbon-fibre parts.

This list also includes high-carbon-fibre air intakes, a carbon-fibre bonnet, a tailgate blanking plate and mud flaps. This is how some of the elements used in the design of the D7X-R are implemented into the street car.

The main colours are Dakar Sand with a Yanbu Turquoise roof, which is inspired by the livery of the 2026 Dakar Rally car. Narvik Black and Alaska White are also available, as is Matte Protective Film.

What is found inside the Defender Dakar?

The interior features a 2+2 seat arrangement and is equipped with row-one race seats specifically designed for the Defender Dakar, with the option of four-point racing harnesses.

There is also storage space in the rear section for racing helmets, and the load space has a dedicated mount for the spare wheel and air compressor.

Therefore, the interior of the Defender Dakar combines race equipment with the necessities of a road car that can seat four people.

What was the performance of the Defender D7X-R in the 2026 Dakar Rally?

The Defender D7X-R had its competitive debut at the 2026 Dakar Rally and placed first, second, and fourth in the Stock class.

The three vehicles have also won first, second and third positions in ten out of thirteen stages. In total, the three vehicles had covered 24,000 km.

The Defender Dakar shares the same technical foundation as the D7X, including the body structure, transmission system, and drivetrain, as in the racing version.

Defender Dakar is a design preview model at present. Production specifications have not been revealed yet. However, applications are being accepted for reservations, which will start in early 2027. Technical specifications and further details are expected to be revealed at the 2027 Dakar Rally, which will be held in Saudi Arabia.
