Vacheron Constantin enhances the Overseas collection with tempting new models

• The Overseas Self-Winding 34.5 mm is presented in an 18K 5N pink gold case with a golden-lacquered dial and a stainless steel case with a deep red-lacquered dial. • Both versions come with a metal bracelet, a leather strap, and a rubber strap. • They are powered by a Manufacture automatic movement.

What are the new Vacheron Constantin Overseas Self-Winding models?

They are new additions to Vacheron Constantin’s (VC) Overseas Self-Winding 34.5 mm range that was first introduced during Watches and Wonders Geneva 2023. The Overseas Self-Winding 34.5 mm is a downsized version of the sought after Overseas Self-Winding Reference 4500V (that was subsequently replaced by the 4520V).

What are their dial features?

Left: 18K 5N pink gold version with its golden-lacquered dial (same as the header image). Right: Stainless steel version with its deep red-lacquered dial. Both dials feature a velvet-finished outer minutes track. They feature an abundance of dial details, such as the Maltese Cross, the brand’s emblem at 12 o’clock, the border around the date window, and the different shape of the hour-markers at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock – all made from 18K gold (5N pink gold or white gold depending on version). Notice the arrow subtle arrow on the tip of the seconds hand, evoking the Overseas collections’ “spirit of travel.” On the stainless steel version, the circle on the outer dial going through the hour-markers evokes a sector dial aesthetic, a detail I really like. Notice the Maltese Cross embossed on the crown at 3 o’clock.

The 18K 5N pink gold version features a golden-lacquered dial with a sunburst satin-finished base. The hour and minute hands and applied hour-markers are made from 18K 5N pink gold and coated with blue Super-LumiNova.

Both versions feature the brand’s “intuitive self-changing interchangeable strap system,” enabling the wearer to switch from bracelet to a choice of straps easily, thereby enhancing the watch’s versatility.

Their case is made from 18K 5N pink gold or stainless steel. They measure 34.5 mm (diameter) * 9.33 mm (thickness). Both dial side and caseback feature a sapphire crystal. Water resistant up to 15 bar or approximately 150 metres.

The 18K 5N pink gold version comes with a bracelet made from 18K 5N pink gold and an additional white alligator strap and white rubber strap. An 18K 5N pink gold self-interchangeable triple folding clasp and an 18K 5N pink gold pin buckle are provided.

The stainless steel version comes with a bracelet made from stainless steel and an additional burgundy shiny alligator leather strap with tone-on-tone stitching and a burgundy rubber strap. A stainless steel self-interchangeable triple folding clasp is provided.

What are the movement features?

Both versions are powered by Manufacture calibre 1088/1, an automatic movement that drives the hours, minutes, seconds with a stop-seconds function and date. It measures 20.8 mm (diameter) * 3.83 mm (thickness). It comprises 144 parts and 24 jewels, beats at a modern frequency of 4 Hz or 28,800 vph and delivers a power reserve of 40 hours (approximately). Winding and time-setting via the screw-down crown at 3 o’clock.

What do we think?

Vacheron Constantin is unlike any other watch brand. Founded in 1755 in Geneva, they are the oldest continuously operating watchmaker in existence. Last year they celebrated their 270th anniversary. Horologically speaking, there is little that they have not accomplished, such as the La Quête Du Temps Mecanique D’Art clock, a once-in-a-lifetime creation that I was fortunate to witness during Watches and Wonders Geneva about three months ago.

Image: Compact case sizes are in vogue today, and a 34.5 mm case size will appeal to both male and female collectors globally. VC debuted the strap change system in the third-generation Overseas in 2016. Today, variations of strap change systems are adopted across the industry.

The third-generation Overseas collection is important for the brand. Unveiled in 2016, it got a broader spectrum of enthusiasts and watch collectors to pay attention to it. Until then, VC was mostly an IYNYK (if you know you know) kind of brand. The Overseas collection changed this. Suddenly, enthusiasts and collectors who were obsessed with the luxury sports watch collection of fellow Holy Trinity brands such as Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak and Patek Philippe’s Nautilus and Aquanaut began paying attention to the Overseas. This led to greater interest in the brand’s other collections, such as the Historiques, Patrimony and Traditionnelle.

In a globally competitive watch industry with both male and female collectors seeking watches that combine prestige, rarity, and versatility, the Overseas is typically their first port of call if they consider watches from VC. The new additions to the Overseas collection present them with two excellent choices.
