What is the new Cook & Re Supra 42?

The Supra 42 is the debut watch of Cook & Re, a new UAE-based watch brand. Endre Szakacs, a former banker with more than 20 years of experience across the UK, Hungary, and the Gulf, is the founder of the brand.

The Supra 42 features a dial inspired by topographic contour lines, essential for climbers prior to a summit attempt. The Memonti Mori, or the blood-red power reserve indicator, is a striking feature. The dial is housed in a 42 mm stainless steel case fitted to a black rubber strap. An automatic Sellita movement drives the four functions.

What is the inspiration behind it?

Endre Szakacs has been fascinated with watches since childhood. As a child, he often slept with a wristwatch next to his pillow to hear it tick and took apart alarm clocks to see their inner workings. Watches stopped being a hobby when he lost his father; he realised how little time one has.

He became frustrated with the philosophy of the larger, established watch brands, namely their status and waitlist games and the assumption that credibility must be inherited. He set out to challenge these aspects by founding Cook & Re. The young brand is building a community inspired by Challenge Over Comfort, a philosophy shaped in Dubai.

What is its dial, case, and strap features?

Image: The case features a sandblasted finish and is corrosion resistant. Notice the grip of the bezel. The hour and minute hands are coated with luminescent material. I think the hour markers, both the indices and Arabic numerals, are also coated with luminescent material. The red accents on the dial and bezel provide a striking contrast with the black dial and case. Winding and time setting are performed via the screw-down crown at 3 o’clock. The stock Sellita SW270-1 movement features a date function, yet the brand decided to do without it. Aesthetically it is a wise decision, though a date function vibes well with the philosophy of this watch.

Case: Made from 316L marine-grade stainless steel, measuring 42 mm (diameter) * 13.7 mm (thickness). Lug-to-lug distance is 48 mm, and lug-width is 22 mm. The compass bezel is unidirectional. The dial side features a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. Solid caseback. The watch is water resistant up to 20 ATM, which is approximately 200 metres.

Strap options: The watch comes with a rubber strap and a NATO strap with red and white stripes. The straps are interchangeable. Spare spring bars and a strap-changing tool are included.

What are its movement features?

The Supra 42 is powered by Sellita SW270-1, a Swiss Made automatic movement that drives the hours, minutes, and seconds with a stop-second function and power reserve indicator. It measures 25.6 mm or 11 ½ lignes (diameter) * 5.6 mm (thickness), comprises 26 jewels, beats at a modern rate of 4 Hz or 28,800 vph, and delivers a power reserve of 40 hours.

What do we think?

Starting a watch brand is not easy, especially if you are an outsider in the industry and do not have the relevant contacts. Endre Szakacs and his team would have dealt with various suppliers (case, dial, hands, straps, movement, etc.) to create the Supra 42 as per their specifications.

Image: The Supra 42 is a challenging environment. It measures achievement by what its owners have done and not what they own. It can complement the collections of both men and women who also own typical luxury watches from larger established and smaller independent brands. This first edition is in Falcon Black. The black rubber strap features the brand’s name and other text (not visible in this picture).

What I really like about the Cook & Re and the Supra 42 is the story and philosophy behind it. It is the anti-status symbol watch, one that shuns the heritage, luxury, and prestige tags of established brands. It speaks to the inner warrior in men contemplating a challenge, whether it is starting a business or attempting their first summit. The brand is creating a community around its collectors or Conquerors. I look forward to seeing how they evolve with subsequent models. For the Supra 42, the hard part will be acquiring one, as there are only 50 pieces planned.
