• The LM101 EVO NYC Edition marks the opening of the MB&F Lounge in New York. • Located in the historic Fuller Building, it is the brand’s permanent home in Manhattan. • The LM101 EVO NYC Edition features a rose gold case and a black PVD-dial. • It is a limited edition of 25 pieces.

What is the new MB&F LM101 EVO NYC Edition?

The LM101 EVO NYC Edition marks the opening of the MB&F Lounge in New York. It is based on the Eric Giroud designed LM101, a model introduced in 2014. One of the simplest, smallest, and thinnest LMs or Legacy Machines, it displays the hours, minutes, power reserve indicator, and the large balance wheel on the dial. It was the first calibre that was entirely designed and developed by the brand’s in-house engineering team.

The EVO version of the LM101 was introduced last year as part of the brand’s 20th anniversary celebrations. It was an answer to requests from collectors for a sportier version of the LM101. The inaugural EVO editions featured enhanced Super-LumiNova displays, an increased power reserve of 60 hours, a titanium case with the patented “FlexRing” shock absorber (an EVO series feature), a screw down crown, an integrated rubber strap, and 80 metres water resistance. The LM101 EVO NYC Edition features an 18K rose gold case and a black PVD-dial.

What is the new MB&F Lounge in New York?

MB&F LM101 EVO NYC Edition.
Image: I love the aesthetics of the lounge. A great place to relax, enjoy a cup of coffee and discuss watches with friends. The Lounge undoubtedly gives MB&F greater freedom and control for hosting events for collectors and enthusiasts in the US. “Created with our long-standing partners Voltige Design & Architecture, the space brings together a cosy living room area, presentation spaces, an office and a dedicated meeting room – intimate, inspiring, and unmistakably MB&F.”

The MB&F Lounge is the brand’s permanent home in New York. It is located on the 5th floor of the Fuller Building, a historic Art Deco property that was established in 1929 on 595 Madison Avenue in Manhattan, overlooking 57th Street. The United States is an important market for the brand since their founding 20 years ago. Westime in Beverly Hills, Stephen Silver in Silicon Valley, Watches of Switzerland in Las Vegas and Provident Jewelry in Juniper, Florida are the brand’s key partners in the US.

The New York Lounge is not a typical retail place, rather it is a cozy place where collectors and enthusiasts can discover the brand’s creations at a relaxed pace.

“Welcoming our community in one of the most iconic NYC skyscrapers is a dream come true. American Tribe members have been some of the most loyal supporters of the brand: the boldness of our designs resonates with the daring mindset of the country. Twenty years after the creation of MB&F, it was time for us to give the brand the right platform to welcome them in New York.” – Maximilian Büsser, MB&F Founder.

What are its dial and case features?

MB&F LM101 EVO NYC Edition.
Image: The large balance wheel takes centre stage. The 18K rose gold case contrasts beautifully with the black PVD-dial with a sunburst finish. MB&F is a master at marrying different worlds: just notice the dress watch case with those curved lugs, the high domed sapphire crystal (UFO-inspired perhaps) and the integrated black rubber strap.

Its black PVD-treated dial plate features a sunburst finish. Hours and minutes are indicated on a subdial between 1 and 2 o’clock. Power reserve is indicated on a subdial at 6 o’clock. The tips of the hands are coated with Super-LumiNova.

Its case is made from 18K rose gold and features the patented “FlexRing” shock absorber or shock protection system. The case comprises 42 parts and measures 40 mm (diameter) * 16.5 mm (thickness). Lug-width: 17 mm. Lug-to-lug distance: 49 mm. Dial side features a high domed sapphire crystal and the caseback a box sapphire crystal, both with dual-side anti-reflective coating. Water resistance is up to 8 ATM / 80 metres / 270 feet. The watch comes with an integrated black rubber strap fitted with a folding buckle.

Did renown watchmaker Kari Voutilainen have a role in the movement?

MB&F LM101 EVO NYC Edition.
Left: Notice the large bespoke 14 mm variable-inertia or free-sprung balance wheel with four traditional regulating screws and a Straumann® double hairspring. Right: Movement finishing is 19th century style, showcasing hand craft such as undulating Geneva waves, interior angles, polished bevels, hand-made engravings, and NAC black bridges. Gold chatons and polished countersinks. Notice “K. Voutilainen” engraved on one of the bridges and the engravings on the case.

Yes. It is powered by an MB&F developed in-house manual winding movement that drives the hours, minutes, and power reserve indicator. It comprises 233 parts and 23 jewels, beats at a luxurious frequency of 2.5 Hz or 18,000 vph and delivers a power reserve of 60 hours from a single mainspring barrel. Winding and time-setting is performed via the screw-down crown at 4 o’clock. Kari Voutilainen was responsible for the movement aesthetics and finishing specifications.

In a conversation with Max Büsser last year, he mentioned that there is beauty in a 2.5 Hz slow beating balance wheel, and on large balance wheels (such as this one), it is impossible to make them beat faster. According to him, a higher beat rate such as 4 Hz is easier, faster, and requires less skill for a watchmaker to regulate, hence cheaper for most brands. He adds that regulating a 2.5 Hz balance wheel requires work, talent, and finesse, and is much more beautiful.

What do we think?

MB&F LM101 EVO NYC Edition.
Image: A bit of Max and Team, a bit of Kari, and a bit of the Big Apple makes for a gorgeous watch with incredible wrist presence.

An 18K rose gold case complemented with a black dial is my favourite kind of watch. A. Lange & Söhne had such a Lange 1 in their catalogue years ago, and until recently, Vacheron Constantin offered this combination in a time-only Patrimony. While MB&F’s LM101 EVO is a completely different watch from these two, in its NYC Edition avatar it evokes similar aesthetic vibes and speaks to my horological taste buds. It captures the rose gold case / black dial’s “old world” dress watch aesthetic yet manages to do it in the sportier EVO version with an integrated rubber strap. It works perfectly. Only in MB&F’s audacious world.

The LM101 EVO NYC Edition is a fitting way to celebrate one of the great independent watch brands in the world opening a new permanent home in New York City, considered the greatest city in the world.
