What Is the Ducati Desmo250 MX?

Ducati has unveiled the Desmo250 MX, a 249.7cc single-cylinder motocross, built specifically for the MX2 quarter-litre class. The Desmo250 is Ducati’s second production motocross bike after the Desmo450 MX, which was launched last year.

The Desmo250 MX is built on the Desmo450 MX’s platform, albeit with a different displacement and suspension geometry, developed in the Italian Prestige MX2 championship with rider Alessandro Lupino.

What Are the Engine Specifications and Performance Figures of the Desmo250 MX?

At the heart of the Desmo250 MX  sits an all-new 249.7cc desmodromic single-cylinder engine that produces 44.5 horsepower at 12,500 rpm and can rev all the way up to 15,000 rpm, paired to a 5-speed transmission and upshift quickshifter. Ducati says, “The engine is designed by drawing on the experience gained from the Panigale V4 R” The engine uses the same bore and stroke dimensions as the Panigale V4 R with 81 mm by 48.4 mm, making this a direct application of Ducati’s racing superbike technology to off-road competition.

The highlight of the engine is its incorporation of the desmodromic valve system, which features titanium intake valves and steel exhaust valves, allowing the engine to achieve the blistering 15,000 rpm limit while maintaining reliability under the extreme demands of motocross racing.

How Do the Chassis and Suspension Design Contribute to Motocross Performance?

The Ducati Desmo250 MX features an aluminium perimeter frame paired to a swingarm. This combination weighs just 8.96 kg, contributing to the motorcycle’s total weight of only 103 kg, which is exceptionally light for a four-stroke 250cc motocross bike.

The suspension comes from Showa, featuring 49 mm upside-down forks at the front, and a rear monoshock. The suspension units are fully adjustable, allowing riders to tune damping, preload, and spring settings to match the characteristics of different motocross tracks.

The braking system uses Brembo components with a 270 mm front disc and 240 mm rear disc, providing the stopping power necessary for aggressive motocross riding.

What Electronics Does the Desmo250 MX Have?

The Ducati Desmo250 MX inherits its complete electronics suite directly from the bigger Desmo450 MX, but has been calibrated specifically for the smaller 249.7cc engine. 

The 250cc Ducati Motocross features a Ducati Traction Control (DTC); this traction control system is adjustable across three levels, allowing riders to select the degree of intervention based on track conditions, tyre grip, and their personal riding style. The list also includes two-level engine braking and launch control. All of these electronics are configurable via the Ducati X-Link app, allowing riders to tweak their bike’s settings remotely through their smartphone.

Where and When Will the Desmo250 MX Be Available for Purchase?

The Ducati Desmo250 MX will be available at selected dealerships in Europe starting from July 2026, with North American deliveries beginning in August 2026, marking the official launch of Ducati’s entry into the MX2 championship market.
