The automotive world loves a good comeback story, and this one’s for the books because a car name has now turned into a standalone brand, and it is a cross-continental Anglo-Sino partnership. Remember the little SUV that Land Rover produced between 1997 and 2015? Well, the SUV still remains in the pages of history, but the name has been resurrected.
Officially revived through a collaboration between Chery and Jaguar Land Rover, Freelander has now been relaunched as an independent premium new-energy SUV brand. Its first production-intent model is called the Freelander 8, and it has just been unveiled with global ambitions, bold styling, and serious tech.
What Is The New Freelander Brand?
The Land Rover Freelander originally launched in 1997 and quickly built a reputation for combining everyday usability with genuine off-road ability. Now, the name returns as a standalone marque focused on electrified SUVs. The new brand describes itself as a British Premium Intelligent All-Terrain Brand.
In other words, it has British-inspired design, but Chinese tech. The brand has already announced that the Middle East will be its first market, and we can expect a launch later this year.
Why Was The Original Freelander So Important?
Before this revival, the Freelander was one of Land Rover’s big success stories. Launched in 1997, the original model arrived as a compact SUV long before crossovers became the default family car. Back then, most SUVs were still large, heavy, truck-like machines. The Freelander offered something different: it was Land Rover’s first monocoque SUV.
It quickly became a hit, at one stage ranking among Europe’s best-selling 4x4s and helping Land Rover reach buyers who wanted adventure without owning a farm or going bankrupt. It also introduced many people to the brand for the first time. In many ways, the Freelander helped prove that smaller premium SUVs could be hugely profitable long before the segment exploded. Without it, the modern luxury crossover boom may have looked very different.

Meet The Freelander 8
The Freelander 8 is the first production-intent SUV from the reborn brand. It was unveiled during the Night of FREELANDER event, held alongside the IBS (Chery International Business Summit). The event brought together nearly 500 global dealer partners and media representatives, underscoring the brand’s transition into a new phase of international development.
The Freelander 8 looks like it is inspired by some old-school off-roaders while integrating futuristic tech. It features a square-jawed shape with straight lines, chunky proportions, and proper SUV presence. At around 5.1 metres long, it has a substantial size, placing it roughly between a Land Rover Defender 110 and Land Rover Defender 130 in footprint.
Design cues that remind you of the original Freelander remain. The triangular rear quarter glass references the first-generation car, while the boxy silhouette gives off hints of older Land Rover Discoverys.
What Are The Specs Of The New Freelander 8?
Detailed specifications have not yet been released, but it already sounds promising. The Freelander 8 is expected to use a modern electrified architecture capable of supporting:
- Battery-electric versions
- Plug-in hybrid versions
- Range-extender EV versions
Reports also point to:
- 800-volt electrical architecture
- CATL battery pack
- Up to 350 kW DC fast charging
- Air suspension
- Rear electronic limited-slip differential
- Possible triple-locking differential setup on some variants
If even half of that makes production unchanged, this SUV promises immense capabilities.
What Does The Cabin Look Like?
Freelander says the interior will feature intelligent luxury and comfort. Confirmed highlights include:
- Ultra-wide dashboard display
- Large central infotainment screen
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 chipset
- Multi-screen interaction system
- Zero-gravity seats
- Three-row seating on some versions
- L2+ advanced driver assistance systems
Can The Freelander 8 Actually Go Off-Road?
This is where Freelander is trying to separate itself from soft-road NEV rivals. The Freelander 8 gets an i-ATS intelligent all-terrain system with nine terrain modes and real-time adaptation. It also uses advanced suspension and differential systems to improve traction across changing surfaces. That means sand, gravel, mud, and rough terrain are all expected to be within reach.
Why Is The Middle East So Important?
This is the biggest local headline: the Middle East will be Freelander’s first international market. With the UAE’s appetite for premium SUVs, new technology, and distinctive brands, it makes perfect sense.
Over 20 top-tier Middle East retail partners have reportedly already submitted business plans, showing strong early interest. So yes, there is a very realistic chance UAE roads will see the Freelander 8 before any global markets do.
Should You Be Excited About The New Freelander 8?
The Freelander name has heritage. The new product has presence. The tech sounds serious. The Middle East gets early access. And unlike many anonymous new EV brands, this one arrives with a story people already know. If Freelander delivers proper build quality, smart pricing, and genuine capability, it could become one of the most interesting new SUV launches in 2026.
