Meet the McLaren W1 the latest Hypercar from Surrey

McLaren W1 enjoys a body designed for maximum aerodynamic efficiency, an extendable rear wing and a 1,275bhp hybrid powertrain.

After the F1 and the P1, the McLaren W1 is the third model to hold the number 1 badge in the history of the brand that emerged from the second-most successful team in Formula 1.

The W1 features a hybrid powertrain consisting of a new V8 4.0 litters turbocharged internal combustion engine, generating 928 horsepower, and an electric motor that produces 347 horsepower for a total of 1,275 horsepower and a total torque of up to 1,353 Newton meters that reaches the rear wheels exclusively via an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The car design team succeeded in reducing the weight of the electrical components within the hybrid system compared to what was available in P1. This allowed the W1 to enjoy a relatively low weight of 1,399 kilograms and thus, in cooperation with its streamlined body, accelerate from 0 to 100 kph in 2.9 seconds.

Just as expected from a brand that has known its best times on racetracks, McLaren prioritised aerodynamic efficiency when drawing the lines of W1, cutting the air in straight lines or generating downforce that stabilises the car when cornering. To achieve this goal, ‏engineers spent over 350 hours in the wind tunnel and tested more than 5,000 individual points to ensure that the W1 is the most aerodynamic among all road-going McLarens.

W1 also features an active rear wing that can extend to mimic the F1 GTR Longtail and works with the car’s other aerodynamic details to generate 1,000 kilograms of downforce when in Race driving mode. Once engaged, the car’s height is lowered by 1.5 inches at the front and 0.7 inches at the rear, while the rear wing extends to the rear by 11.8 inches. It acts as an air brake under hard braking, taking a vertical position.

The W1 boasts the third generation of the suspension settings control system, which can be adjusted in three modes. The first is Comfort, in which the suspension provides a softness that allows the road vibrations to be absorbed. Sport enhances the suspension with more rigidity, and Race delivers the car with the highest performance. Since the most prominent factor that helps the car achieve high performance on the tracks is effective braking, the W1 is equipped with carbon ceramic disc brakes of six pistons in the front and four in the rear, which allows the car to stop from a speed of 100 kph in a distance of no more than 29 meters.

Despite the design inspired by racing cars, the W1 cockpit is not devoid of luxury features such as leather and high-quality materials that make it up. It also contains a touch screen and an information system compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto applications.

McLaren will build just 399 specimens. The asking price to land one in your garage is about AED 7.7 million.
