JLR’s Defender Brand Announces New Top Model

It’ll debut later this year.

Since the Series 1 debuted in 1948, the Defender name has become synonymous with a go-anywhere vehicle. However, JLR’s sub-brand has something new brimming for those who like to explore the less-travelled parts. A new top model under the Defender brand will debut later this year, called Defender OCTA. Not much has been revealed, apart from a few tasty snippets.

Per the brand, the Defender OCTA will be the new range-topper. In its words, “the new flagship Defender will be the toughest, most capable and luxurious model in the line-up”. A twin-turbo V8 petrol with mild-hybrid tech will power the model in question. It’ll also feature something called 6D Dynamics air suspension, which, according to the maker, will help deliver “extreme performance across all terrains”. The system will enable the Defender OCTA to maintain an almost balanced stance during acceleration, braking and cornering on-road. Also, it’ll help maximise independent wheel travel and articulation over the rougher paths.

The model’s name is derived from a diamond’s octahedron shape. That will be pretty evident from the Defender OCTA’s interior and exterior design cues, including a gloss black diamond within a machined and sandblasted titanium disc on each Signature Graphic panel.

The Defender OCTA is currently going through “the most exhaustive development regime in Defender history”. It’s being tested in Sweden’s snow and ice, Dubai sand dunes, Nurburgring tarmac and Moab rock crawls.
