Mahindra Launches Two New Variants Of XUV300

The sub-compact SUV now has a starting price of INR 7.99 lakh.

Indian auto giant Mahindra has expanded the portfolio of the XUV300. Two new petrol-powered variants have joined the party, one each in W2 and W4 trim levels. Specifically, the new entry-level derivative – the W2 petrol-MT (TMPFI) – comes at an ex-showroom price tag of INR 7.99 lakh. The other newcomer is the W4 petrol-MT (TGDi), which costs INR 9.29 lakh. In case you’re wondering, TMPFI and TGDi are 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder motors backed by a turbocharger.

Brace yourselves for some math. What becomes the least-expensive variant of the Mahindra XUV300 is also the first one in the W2 trim. Compared to the next-in-line W4 petrol-MT (TMPFI) derivative, the new base variant costs INR 66,000 less. However, the second new derivative – the W4 petrol-MT (TGDi) – demands a premium of INR 64,000 over the W4 petrol-MT (TMPFI). Another equation worth looking at is comparing the two least-costly TGDi derivatives – W4 petrol-MT vs W6 petrol-MT. Here, the price gap increases to INR 1.2 lakh.

Okay. Enough of this vs that. Mahindra has also taken the opportunity to add the much-sought-after sunroof in the W4 trim level. This applies to all petrol and diesel derivatives, which many will welcome.

The Mahindra XUV300 has three engine options – two petrol (mentioned above) and a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel. The 1.2-litre TMPFI offers 109hp/200Nm, whereas the 1.2-litre TGDi generates 129hp/230Nm. The latter also has an over-boost function, which, for a brief period, increases the peak torque to 250Nm. If you want even more torque in your XUV300, settle for the diesel engine. It outputs 115hp/300Nm. All three engines are available with a 6-speed manual transmission. However, the 6-speed AMT option isn’t available with the TGDi mill.

The Mahindra XUV300 competes directly with the Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Kia Sonet and the Hyundai Venue in India. If you were in the market to buy one of these, which would it be?
