RM Sotheby’s to auction the astonishing Aurora Collection
The Aurora Collection comprises a dozen exclusive Ferraris that have largely been hidden from the public eye
The renowned luxury auction house RM Sotheby’s is back with an exclusive collection of historic and modern supercars which spans 68 years of automotive history. It’s called the Aurora Collection and is based out of Sweden, with the contingent primarily hidden from the public eye until now. RM Sotheby has been tasked to put the collection under the hammer, and the auction will be carried out at the banner’s Villa Erba sale on 20th May without any reserve on the lots.
Among the revered cars to get sold to the highest bidder, the 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta by Scaglietti appears to be one model that’ll attract the highest bids. Regarded by many as one of the most beautiful sports GT cars ever created, the unit on sale is number 62 of 165 built and was the last SWB built in the 1960 body style. This particular car has also walked the red carpet as it was featured in the 1968 film The Love Bug. In October 2008, the car procured its Ferrari Classiche certification, and RM Sotheby estimates this 250 GT SWB to fetch up to €8,500,000.
Following up on the collection’s centrepiece is another Ferrari, a 1956 Ferrari 500 TR Spider by Scaglietti. It boasts an extensive race history in its time, including a class win and 4th place in the 1957 Helsinki Grand Prix and has appeared in a number of Grand Prix de Monaco Historique races. This is example number 3 of the mere 17 ever built and has resided in the consignor’s collection since 2011. The auction house anticipates attracting bids of around the €4,000,000 mark.
Multiple Ferraris galore in this fine Aurora Collection comprising one of 122 built 1973 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spider. This example was acquired new by the consignor, and it has been very sparingly used in the 50 years since. It’s estimated to fetch €2,500,000 or higher. However, it’s said no true Ferrari collection is complete without a 275, and the Aurora Collection possesses a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 and a 1965 Ferrari 275 GTS convertible. The former is expected to attract bids over €2,700,000, while the latter could command an estimated €1,300,000.
While those were some classic Ferraris in the collection, the modern prancing horse contingent comprises a 2019 Ferrari Monza SP1 limited-production model with only 25 kilometres on the odometer and is estimated to fetch €2,500,000. A one-of-80 2011 Ferrari SA Aperta also resides in the Aurora Collection, with a 901 km odometer reading and an estimated bid of €250,000.
The collection comprises a host of other Ferraris, but two equally iconic examples from Mercedes Benz deserve mention. One is a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing in classic silver estimated at €1,200,000; the other is a 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300 Sc Roadster anticipated to fetch over €600,000.
