Would You Buy The All-New Hyundai Verna?
The sedan goes diesel-free.
In a world where demand for SUVs keeps touching new heights month-on-month, does it make sense to introduce a sedan in the same price range? Well, Hyundai is in the “we believe so” category. And I’m so glad! Today, the all-new Verna has gone on sale in India and in typical Hyundai fashion, it possesses a bold design and a lot to desire. Prices start at INR 10.90 lakh and go up to INR 17.38 lakh. Here’s the variant-wise price list:
While those numbers might startle some souls out there, there’s an even bigger takeaway from that table. There’s no diesel on offer anymore! And the 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine has gone as well. Replacing it is a new 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol mill that offers segment-beating performance with an output of 160hp/253Nm. One could have that motor with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. But as you can see from the table above, the new powerplant is available only in the top two tiers.
The other engine option is a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol, which produces 115hp/144Nm. It also has two transmission options – a 6-speed manual and a CVT. This engine option will better serve those who like to be driven around.
Features? Being a Hyundai, you know how this section is going to be! So yes, the all-new Verna is jam-packed with creature comforts. The list includes auto LED headlamps, two 10.25-inch displays (one each for infotainment purposes and the driver’s instrument cluster), an 8-speaker Bose sound system, heated and ventilated front seats, 64-colour ambient lighting, automatic climate control and a 528-litre boot – the most spacious in the segment.
The all-new Hyundai Verna offers a lot on the safety and assistance systems front. In addition to front and rear parking sensors, electronic stability control and hill start assist, the sedan packs 17 ADAS features. The list includes driver attention warning, rear cross-traffic collision avoidance function, forward collision warning, lane keeping assist, lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control.
Hyundai has seven monotone and two dual-tone colour finishes available for the Verna. However, if you want a white or red body colour mated with a black roof, you’d have to settle for one of the turbocharged SX or SX (O) variants. And for that two-tone finish, you’ll have to pay a premium. Also, the turbo derivatives come with an all-black interior theme with red accents and black 16-inch alloys with red brake callipers.
Rivals? In its latest avatar, the Hyundai Verna takes the game to the Honda City, Skoda Slavia and the Volkswagen Virtus. Then, of course, there’s the Ciaz. But against modern competition, the Maruti Suzuki sedan feels dated.
