Used Toyota Land Cruisers now sell for twice as much as brand new

A four-year wait before getting behind the wheel of a new model

When Toyota unveiled the new generation of its Land Cruiser last year, no one expected such a success. It must be said that the number of orders for the vehicle is literally strangling the Japanese brand. The factories have already been at maximum capability for almost a year, while demand is still strong. And mechanically, the delivery times are getting longer and longer since it currently takes more than four years to receive a brand new Land Cruiser.

To avoid such a wait, some customers have turned to the used car market. But second-hand models are still rare, while a significant number of potential new buyers have turned to this market. Not surprisingly, the average price of ‘new’ used Land Cruisers has soared. In Japan, some examples are being traded for more than €150,000, which is simply double the price of a new one.

To avoid a saturation that would lead to widespread chaos, Toyota has decided to close the Land Cruiser order book until the pressure returns to normal levels. Future buyers of the large 4×4 will therefore have to be extremely patient. Toyota has already booked more than one million orders for the new Land Cruiser…only for Japan.
