Citroën C4 X (2023) – The automotive melting pot

The C4 turns into a sedan

It’s a hard fact to swallow: sedans are no longer being sold in favor of SUVs. That’s why Citroën tried last year with the C5 X, which cleverly mixed the sedan and the crossover. The brand is doing it again today with the C4 X which is none other than the C4 – itself a mix between the sedan and the SUV – to which a boot lid has been added.

A suffix is a particle that is added to a radical to change its meaning. With an ‘X’ as a suffix, the C4 X remains above all a C4 with an unchanged face. But then comes the biggest question: does it have a nice butt? The question is complex and the answers are bound to differ. No doubt it won’t be a supermodel for many.

Yet, with a sloping roofline akin to a coupe, the C4 X retains balanced proportions like the C5 X. However, there is no hatchback but a boot lid with a generous spoiler. The taillights are also new, while the bumper has an imposing raw plastic protection for style. The ‘shark’ roof antenna is also a small novelty.

Great as a taxi?

On board, the C4 X provides more space for rear passengers thanks to its 4.60m length. As for the furniture, the car borrows its entire dashboard from the C4, except for one detail: the infotainment system is based on the operating system of the 308 and C5 X, which makes it more fluid and provides better graphics. This is good because the old interface was close to a disaster in almost all areas.

Another good point is that the vehicle retains the high-density seats and the double progressive hydraulic bumpers that are part of the Citroën Advanced Comfort programme. Under the bonnet, the C4 X continues to follow in the footsteps of the C4 by offering two 100 and 130 PS petrol engines, a 130 PS diesel and a 136 PS electric version with a 50 kWh battery for a range of 360 km. The EAT8 automatic gearbox remains on the most powerful engines.

The new Citroën C4 X will be produced in Madrid and marketed at the end of the year. Its main competitor will be the Renault Arkana.
