VW Taigun Has Turned One!

Volkswagen India’s first heavily-localised model, courtesy of the India 2.0 project, has turned one. And to commemorate that, the carmaker has created a unique version of the compact SUV. And that has been christened as the First Anniversary Edition. It’s based on the Topline derivative of the Dynamic Line and is available in manual as well as automatic guises. Here are the prices:

• 1.0 TSI Manual: INR 15.70 Lakh

• 1.0 TSI Automatic: INR 17.20 Lakh

Now, if you compare those prices with donor variants, you’ll find a jump of INR 30,000. And what do you get for that extra amount? First, there are a bunch of “1st” anniversary badges on the exterior and interior. Then you get black graphics for the C-pillars, blacked-out roof and body-coloured door garnish. Also, the celebratory version dons “high lux” fog lamps, door-edge protectors, black ORVM caps, window visors and aluminium pedals. And to top it all, there’s a new paint shade, Rising Blue, which is exclusive to the Taigun First Anniversary Edition. If you don’t like that, this version of the SUV is also available in Curcuma Yellow and Wild Cherry Red.

As you’d expect, there are no mechanical changes to report. The 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder TSI motor pumps out 113bhp/178Nm. It can be teamed with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed torque converter. And since the Taigun Anniversary Edition is based on the fully-loaded derivative, the list of features is quite extensive. It includes cruise control, 17-inch alloy wheels, six airbags, electronic stability control, a tyre pressure monitoring system, ventilated front seats, automatic climate control and a wireless mobile charger.

Volkswagen says that over the first year, it has received more than 40,000 bookings for the SUV. Out of the lot, over 22,000 units have been delivered to their respective buyers. The deficit will continue to shrink as Volkswagen finds ways to overcome the supply chain issues. In India, the Taigun competes with the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and its step-sibling – the Skoda Karoq. Soon, two new models – Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara – will join the party.
