What’s new in Volvo XC60 and XC90?
Volvo added two new plug-in hybrid variants to its range, including long-range versions of the popular XC60 and XC90 for select European and US markets. The XC60 now features an upgraded design and technical solutions, while the XC90 gets the new powertrain.
Both vehicles feature a larger floor-integrated battery pack and a stronger electric motor than their existing plug-in hybrid models. Thanks to these modifications, electric range increases by more than 2.5 times, according to Volvo. A petrol engine also forms part of the powertrain and helps drive the vehicle when electric mode cannot provide enough power.
Apart from the plug-in hybrid engines, both models are still on sale as mild-hybrid versions.
How far can the new plug-in hybrids travel on electricity?
The updated XC60 plug-in hybrid can travel up to 200 km on electric power from a full charge, while the XC90 has a claimed electric range of up to 160 km.
This growth is mainly due to the larger battery and the advanced electric motor. The extra range means you can make more daily journeys on electric power alone, depending on weather conditions, road surface, driving style, and car specification.

What changes have been made to the Volvo XC60?
There are some changes made to the outside of the XC60: there is a new grille, front bumper, bonnet, front wings, and wheels. The new matrix LED headlights have the same signature – Thor’s Hammer lights.
On the rear, the tailgate, LED lighting, and bumper have a new design. A horizontal design is more commonly used.
Inside the cabin, the car has a new dashboard and door panels, with wood trim and optional Cardamom ventilated Nappa leather. The car also has an updated lighting system.
What safety and driver-assistance features are included?
There are some new safety technologies included in the updated Volvo XC60.
These features include emergency braking, emergency braking steering, and warning systems that can alert passengers to a bicycle’s proximity before they open the car door.
The SUV’s new sensor setup enables driver-assistance features. Available technologies include lane change assistance and a 360-degree camera with 3D viewing.
What infotainment technologies are installed in the SUVs?
The XC60 is fitted with an 11.2-inch display screen with the latest version of the Volvo Car UX infotainment interface. This allows you to access vehicle information, navigation, and other features.
Google Gemini, Google’s next-generation AI assistant, is also included in the technology package. It lets you plan journeys, choose stops, and manage messages using natural-language commands.
The XC90 gets Gemini as well.
What’s new with the XC90?
It remains a seven-seat SUV and keeps all the changes made in recent updates. It features wood trim inside along with other high-end materials, and you can also order the optional Bowers & Wilkins audio system.
In addition, the new long-range plug-in hybrid version features a larger battery and an electric motor alongside the petrol engine, while still offering all the safety and assistance systems available at the moment.
Both SUV models support over-the-air updates, meaning software updates can be done remotely after delivery.
When will Volvo plug-in hybrids become available?
Orders for the XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrids, including Black Edition variants, are already open in certain markets. Production is set to start later in autumn 2026. Prices will vary by market, depending on trim and equipment level.
