Volkswagen’s ID. CROSS Concept Premieres: Small in Size, Big in Character

Volkswagen has just pulled the covers off its latest electric compact SUV at IAA MOBILITY in Munich: the ID. CROSS Concept. Positioned as an entry-level electric vehicle in the T-Cross class, this concept previews a production-ready model expected to hit European roads in 2026.

Small SUV, Big Usability

At 4,161mm long, 1,839mm wide, and 1,588mm tall, the ID. CROSS concept is similar in size to the T-Cross. Compact enough for city streets and parking garages, it rides on a 2,601mm wheelbase. For the IAA show car, Volkswagen fitted concept-spec 21-inch Balboa wheels with specially designed Goodyear tyres, giving it a rugged yet stylish stance.

Despite its compact dimensions, the ID. CROSS makes smart use of space inside. It seats five, offers a 450-litre boot, plus a 25-litre storage area under the bonnet, and feels roomy thanks to its wide body and open design. The rear seats can also fold flat for a lounge-style setup — a subtle nod to VW’s iconic Bus.

Fresh Take on VW Styling

Volkswagen’s design chief Andreas Mindt describes the ID. CROSS Concept’s look as “Pure Positive,” built on three cornerstones: stability, likeability, and secret sauce. In simple terms, it’s a clean, sharp, and friendly design with hints of VW icons like the Golf and ID.Buzz.

The concept’s Urban Jungle green paint, 3D light signatures, and distinctive C-pillars give the car personality, while the front and rear graphics almost make the ID. CROSS look like it’s smiling. These touches make the car immediately recognisable, striking a balance between modern design and Volkswagen heritage.

Lounge-Style Interior

Inside, and the ID. CROSS Concept looks more like a small electric lounge than a compact SUV. The interior is dressed in Vanilla Chai beige fabric surfaces. Ambient lighting, climate control, and sound modes can be adjusted to suit the mood.

The cockpit combines user-friendly displays and physical controls for a driver-focused setup. A central 13-inch infotainment screen pairs with an 11-inch digital instrument panel, while a redesigned multifunction steering wheel keeps essential buttons within easy reach. The floating centre console even integrates real plants, adding a touch of nature to this futuristic cabin.

MEB+ Platform & Electric Drive

Under the skin, the ID. CROSS Concept rides on Volkswagen’s updated MEB+ modular electric platform, an evolution of the company’s tried-and-tested EV architecture. This front-wheel-drive setup features a newly developed electric motor integrated into the front axle, delivering 208hp.

The flat high-voltage battery, housed in the sandwich floor, provides a claimed WLTP range of up to 420 kilometres, making the ID. CROSS suitable for both city runs and longer trips. For practical enthusiasts, it supports a drawbar load of 75 kg — enough for two e-bikes — and can tow trailers weighing up to 1,200kg. Top speed is limited to 175 km/h.

Affordable EVs for the Masses

The ID. CROSS Concept is part of Volkswagen’s push into entry-level electric mobility, joining a growing family of small EVs, including the ID.2 all, ID. GTI Concept, and ID. EVERY1, with production versions starting to come out in 2026. Using the Brand Group Core, across SEAT, Cupra, Škoda, and VW, Volkswagen aims to deliver affordable, technically advanced EVs with strong economies of scale.
