Urus Army Now 20,000 Strong

The SUV racks up yet another record for its maker.

A buyer from Azerbaijan ordered a personalised Urus with black callipers, a panoramic roof, and a beautiful paint job that Lamborghini calls Viola Mithras. Today, the finished product has come off the assembly line, and it’s a landmark unit. It became the 20,000th Urus built since the model’s debut in 2018. That means the SUV has bagged the record of the most produced model in the shortest time (four years). Not even the Huracan or the Gallardo generated such strong demand.

So, what does that record mean for Lamborghini? A lot, actually! The Urus has been instrumental in doubling the brand’s volumes and the size of the Sant’Agata Bolognese factory. More on that later. But first, here’s what Stephan Winkelman, Automobili Lamborghini Chairman and CEO, said:

The Urus is a perfect complement to our super sports model ranges, providing a luxurious and high-performance daily drive for those who identify with our authentic Italian brand.

Here’s another staggering statistic from Lamborghini: it estimates that Urus owned around the world have covered over 360 million kilometres collectively. I’m guessing that doesn’t include the 6,500km covered on tours across Japan, Sardinia, Portugal, Italy and several other nations. One specimen even scaled the world’s highest driveable road: India’s Umling La Pass at 19,300 ft.

Going back to the effect that the Urus has had on Lamborghini. It has had to increase the size of the factory from 80,000 to 160,000 sq. m. Employment picked up. To establish the Urus project properly, Lamborghini hired over 500 new permanent staff between 2015 and 2018. That’s not all. The Italian brand has also made the Urus supply chain more sustainable by replacing transportation using trucks with trains. That ensured a reduction in CO2 emissions by 85 per cent.

The Urus has a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 under the bonnet, belting out 650hp and 850Nm of peak torque. With a slick gearbox feeding the oomph to all four wheels, the SUV can hit 100kmph from nothing in 3.6 seconds and clock 305kmph flat out. Lambo’s sole SUV competes with the Aston Martin DBX and the Bentley Bentayga.
