The Volkswagen Caddy gets confused in the moose test

This poor performance was partly due to the tyres

When it comes to agility, SUVs were known to be rarely up to the task. But they’re not the worst performers in this area. LCVs and pickup trucks are even less at ease because their chassis prioritizes cargo capabilities over handling. It’s no surprise that vans are affected by this phenomenon as they are a natural derivative of LCVs.

Therefore, you should not expect to get great results in the dreaded run-up test. The latest Volkswagen Caddy, for example, did not impress in the test. This is not surprising given its high mass and very high centre of gravity compared to a sedan. The 67 kph (41.6 mph) speed is therefore low in absolute terms, even for a minivan. Although the steering is fairly responsive, it doesn’t compensate for a significant understeer and a slightly lazy ESP.

When you increase the speed, the vehicle refuses to enter the third lane of cones. It’s a pity because the body roll remain under control for a car of this calibre. It has to be said that the tyres fitted to the Caddy did not help it to achieve a better result. The all-season tyres fitted to the vehicle are not the best performers in summer, especially under the Spanish sun.

In comparison, the Opel Combo Life concluded the test at a speed of 77 kph (47.8 mph), showing much better footwork than the Caddy. So it remains to be seen how well the Wolfsburg van will fare with a more suitable pair of trainers…
