The Mercedes-AMG One is way faster than the AMG GT Black Series in a drag race

What’s the difference between a supercar and an hypercar?

The Mercedes Black Series label is associated with the ultimate versions of AMG sports models at the end of their life. These ultra-exclusive variants have a limited production run and offer, among other things, additional exterior and interior details as well as increased horsepower. At the end of 2020, the AMG GT received its Black Series version, which was largely inspired by the GT3 and GT4 racing models.

It features an enlarged front grille with numerous carbon fibre elements. Also on the side are new 19 and 20 inch wheels fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 2R tyres. At the rear, there are four exhaust pipes housed in an imposing diffuser and an impressive spoiler that generates up to 400 kg of aerodynamic support. Under the bonnet, the 4.0-litre V8 is now rated at 720 PS and 800 Nm of torque, making it a real competition beast.

However, Mercedes was keen to show how much better the AMG-One is in a drag race. Inspired by the world of F1, the car has a small 1.6-litre V6 but still develops 1,063 PS. This figure is made possible by the installation of four electric motors. And despite all this, the AMG-One weighs only 1,695 kilograms thanks to its carbon fibre monocoque chassis.

This technique is closely derived from that used in the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 cars. Because it can run at 11,000 rpm, this exceptional engine also needs to be replaced every 50,000 km. With its race car DNA, the hypercar is expected to humiliate the AMG GT Black Series in a drag race. And indeed it does, as the AMG-One comfortably outruns the AMG GT Black Series and completes the kilometer at a speed of 315 kph versus 271 kph.

However, the AMG GT Black Series clearly does not fall short, especially in the first few meters where it shows a responsiveness equivalent to the AMG-One despite the absence of electric motors. Also, there is a clear difference between the sound of the 1.6-litre V6 and the more melodious 4.0-litre V8.
