The legendary Toyota Crown makes a return to the UAE

It gets built on an all-new platform with new two-tone exteriors and a tech-laden cabin

The Crown has been a revered nameplate in Toyota’s stable since its introduction in the 1950s. Spanning 15 generations and multiple body styles comprising sport sedans, station wagons and pickup trucks, the Toyota Crown was also the first Japanese sedan to hit Middle East shores in 1960. After a two-decade absence from the region, Toyota has decided to bring back the historic Crown nameplate in its all-new 16th-generation avatar.

The all-new Crown now gets crowned as the most luxurious sedan to be sold in Toyota’s dealerships in the UAE. Toyota claims the interiors are rich in materials and supreme in comfort, but the new-age exteriors may catch many off guard. When viewed head-on, the proportions lend it a typical sedan profile, one glance from the sides showcases the rising shoulder line and a side profile that’s taller than a regular sedan to conclude the new Crown to be a cross between a sedan and a crossover. The fitment of 21-inch wheels, the biggest ever fit on a Toyota, adds to the polarising exteriors.

The striking design elements of the exterior get mimicked on the air vents of the interior. The dashboard boasts a modern-day layout of two screens: a 12.3-inch TFT all-digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. As the Crown gets pitted as the most luxurious sedan in Toyota’s UAE stable, it gets brimmed with features such as a head-up display (HUD), dual-zone climate control with rear AC vents, ventilated seats, an 11-speaker JBL surround sound system, and a hands-free, electrically powered trunk that can be operated using a foot-operated system. Some degree of reclining for the rear seats is also available to enhance driving comfort.

Powering the all-new Toyota Crown is a Hybrid Turbo powertrain. Toyota’s first-ever 2.4-litre inline four-cylinder turbo engine gets paired with two electric motors to produce a combined output of 345hp and best-in-class (claimed) fuel efficiency of 18.0kmpl. The power gets sent to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission.

Thanks to the incorporation of Toyota Safety Sense, the Crown benefits from an entire suite of safety systems comprising a Pre-Collision System (PCS), Automatic Emergency Brake, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert and many more. The new Crown also features Toyota’s first-ever Safe Exit Assist (SEA), which uses the Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) to help prevent accidents by detecting approaching traffic or cyclists from the rear and automatically cancelling door openings to avoid potential collisions.

With prices starting at around the AED200,000 mark, the new Toyota Crown is available in two trim levels. The top trim further adds the option of a two-tone paint shade, enhancing the new Crown’s striking design.

The all-new Toyota Crown exhibits not just revamped interiors and exteriors but a whole new identity. Earlier this year, the global Toyota CEO announced the Crown becoming a unique banner within Toyota. The global announcement saw the launch of three other vehicles along with the newly launched Crown – a full-sized luxury sedan, a sporty crossover and an estate. Though, word on the arrival of these global models to the shores of the Middle East has yet to be received. But one can expect the sporty crossover to be given the first green light, whenever that happens.
