Meet the Bugatti W16 Mistral ‘Le Retour du Jeune Prince,’ the latest one-off creation from Bugatti’s Sur Mesure division. Based on the already outrageous W16 Mistral roadster, this bespoke commission transforms the world’s fastest roadster into something far more personal: a literary tribute inspired by moonlight, stars, and The Little Prince universe.
And yes, underneath all the artistry sits an 8.0-litre quad-turbocharged W16 producing 1,578hp and 1,600Nm of torque. Apparently, even poetry needs four turbochargers. Now that’s poetic.
The Story Behind The Name
The name ‘Le Retour du Jeune Prince’ translates to The Return of the Young Prince. The car was commissioned by a Bugatti collector who also happens to be the author of a literary continuation inspired by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s legendary novella Le Petit Prince (The Little Prince).
The project reportedly began in October 2023 when the customer met Bugatti’s Sur Mesure and Individualization Manager, Jascha Straub, in Molsheim. From there, the entire car evolved around themes from the owner’s literary work, specifically the moon, stars, Earth, and emotional storytelling. This is the kind of project only Bugatti could justify with a straight face. And somehow, it works brilliantly.
What Is The Exterior Design & Styling Like?
The biggest visual talking point is the bespoke paint finish. Bugatti created a completely unique copper-and-bronze colourway for this car, designed to mimic the warmth and softness of lunar light.
Unlike flat metallic finishes seen on ordinary luxury cars, this paint was engineered to dramatically change character depending on lighting conditions. On the W16 Mistral’s sculpted surfaces, the reflections shift continuously, giving the car an almost liquid-metal appearance under sunlight.
The iconic Bugatti horseshoe grille also gets a redesign. Its internal detailing now flows upward alongside the hood lines, visually extending the front-end movement.
Then come the jewellery-like details:
- Gold outlining around the Bugatti Macaron
- Copper-finished brake calipers
- Matching copper ‘EB’ wheel centre emblems
- Hand-painted silver star constellations across the rear bodywork
- Hidden artwork beneath the active rear air brake
That last detail is particularly special. When the air brake deploys, it reveals an illustration inspired by the famous prince-and-fox scene from The Little Prince. Literature references under the rear wing. How cool is that?
How Luxurious Is The Cabin?
Inside, the W16 Mistral ‘Le Retour du Jeune Prince’ continues the celestial theme with obsessive attention to detail. The interior uses two bespoke leather colours: Terre d’Or & Driftwood.
The lighter Terre d’Or leather covers the door panels, where embroidered moon graphics and stitched star motifs create the feeling of a handcrafted luxury observatory. Even the headrests continue the constellation theme.
Brown carbon-fibre trim receives star-inspired detailing, while the centre console incorporates bespoke inlays developed specifically for this commission. But the true centrepiece sits inside the gear shifter.
3D-Scanned Rose For The Gear Lever
Bugatti embedded a sculpted silver rose into the gear selector. And this wasn’t simply designed digitally. The company reportedly 3D-scanned a real flower before miniaturising and sculpting it into silver artwork. The rose references the emotional symbolism from The Little Prince, acting as a reminder of tenderness, memory, and connection. It’s gloriously unnecessary. Which makes it perfect.

Does It Use The Same Engine?
As artistic as this one-off may be, the mechanical package underneath remains absolutely savage. The Bugatti W16 Mistral is powered by the brand’s legendary 8.0-litre quad-turbocharged W16 engine producing:
- 1,578hp
- 1,600Nm
- 0-100 km/h in around 2.5 seconds
- Top speed: 453.91 km/h
That officially makes it the fastest roadster in the world. The Mistral is also historically significant because it represents the final road-going application of Bugatti’s W16 engine architecture — a powertrain lineage that began with the Veyron under Ferdinand Piëch before evolving through the Chiron family.
Only 99 examples of the W16 Mistral will ever exist. This Sur Mesure commission is a one-of-one within that already ultra-exclusive production run.
Bugatti Sur Mesure Keeps Pushing Automotive Boundaries
Bugatti’s recent Sur Mesure creations have become increasingly theatrical. Earlier one-offs like the dragonfly-inspired ‘Fly Bug’ and the jewel-themed ‘La Perle Rare’ already showed how far Bugatti’s artisans were willing to go. But ‘Le Retour du Jeune Prince’ feels different.
It’s less about showing wealth and more about translating a personal story into mechanical art. The car becomes a physical extension of literature, memory, and imagination, while still being capable of humiliating almost anything else on four wheels.
That duality is what makes Bugatti fascinating. One moment, they’re discussing embroidery patterns inspired by moonlight. The next moment, the same car is capable of 453km/h with the roof removed.
