The Hyryder Gets Two CNG Variants

The powerplant loses the mild-hybrid system to accommodate the bi-fuel configuration.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder has been available with either a mild-hybrid system or a strong one. The aim of using both those technologies was to boost mileage. And if fuel economy is your main concern, there’s now a third powertrain setup available for the Urban Cruiser Hyryder. It is the much-awaited CNG option. For buyers, there are two CNG variants available – S and G. Where the former has a price tag of INR 13.23 lakh, the latter demands INR 15.29 lakh.

The bi-fuel Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder comes with a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder engine, which, when fed with petrol, outputs 101hp/136Nm. Switch the fuel to CNG, and the power and torque figures drop to 88hp and 122Nm, respectively. There’s no mild-hybrid system or all-wheel-drive in the mix, and the only transmission option available is a 5-speed manual. Toyota claims that the Urban Cruiser Hyryder CNG can deliver up to 26.6 km/kg mileage.

The features list for the S variant includes LED DRLs, halogen projector headlamps, a rear-view camera, hill hold control, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment mated to a four-speaker sound system, tilt & telescopic adjust for the steering wheel, automatic climate control with a PM2.5 filter and push-button start/stop. The costlier G variant justifies with price difference by offering a longer list of features, including a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment with a six-speaker sound system, 17-inch alloy wheels, auto-folding ORVMs, automatic LED projector headlamps, rear wiper with washer and front side & curtain airbags.

So, there you have it. The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder becomes the second of its kind (in its segment) to come with a factory-fitted CNG kit. The first was, of course, the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. And like the other two powertrain options (mild- and strong-hybrid), the CNG option is aimed at consumers who want to keep the running costs at the minimum. Other options in the segment include the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq and MG Astor.
