The All-New Skoda Superb Sheds Cover

Besides offering more space and features, the new-gen model packs recycled materials and uses more efficient powertrains.

After taking the wraps off the new Kodiaq last month, Skoda is back with another world premiere. This time around, the Czech brand has unveiled the fourth-generation Superb. Like before, there’s an option to buy one in a hatchback form or an estate, which the carmaker calls Combi. However, there are substantial changes in the core recipe. The new-gen Superb is more spacious and feature-rich than its predecessor. Also, it packs recycled materials to boost sustainability while using more efficient powertrains.

In its latest avatar, the Superb model range has grown in length and height. However, it has the same wheelbase, and the width has shrunken by 1.5cm. And yet, Skoda’s preliminary data shows that the headroom has increased, and so has the luggage room. Where the hatchback can gulp 645 litres of stuff, which is 20 litres more than before, the Combi can store 690 litres, an increment of 30 litres. Folding the rear seats down increases the boot space to 1,920 litres in the Superb estate. Skoda has lined up eight colours for the exterior, six of which are new. Furthermore, all Superb variants come with alloy wheels ranging from 16 inches to 19 inches in diameter.

It is worth mentioning that the design changes have led to a reduction in drag coefficient. By redesigning the ORVMs, equipping the front bumper with air curtains and A-pillars with rain deflectors while using aerodynamically optimised wheels and tyres, the coefficient of drag values have dropped to 0.23 and 0.25 for the hatchback and Combi, respectively. In other words, the former is 10 per cent more aerodynamic than before, and the latter is up to 15 per cent.

Unsurprisingly, the new-gen Superb shares its interior design, materials and features with its sibling – the Kodiaq. That means one could have the new Superb with a 13-inch infotainment system next to a sporty two-spoke multifunction steering wheel. Accompanying the latter is a 10-inch digital instrument cluster, which can be clubbed with a head-up display. The features list also includes a 14-speaker Canton sound system, massaging front seats, 45-watt USB-C charging ports, Skoda Connect (connected-car features) and automatic climate control. For upholstery, there’s choice among fabric, suede, faux leather and genuine leather, with multiple colour options. And all textiles in the new-gen Superb, including the headliner, are made of 100 per cent recycled materials.

One could have the new-gen Skoda Superb with various powertrains, covering petrol-only, petrol with mild-hybrid, petrol with strong-hybrid and diesel. The 1.5 TSI PHEV, limited to the Combi, offers 201hp and comes with a 6-speed DSG. The mild-hybridised version of the same engine is good for 148hp and has a 7-speed DSG. The same transmission is used with two 2.0-litre TSI motors – 201hp and 261hp – and two 2.0-litre TDI engines – 148hp and 190hp. The top-tier versions of the 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines come with an all-wheel-drive system. The PHEV, on the other hand, packs a 2.57kWh battery, enough for a 100+km range. It can be replenished using 11kW AC chargers, with a 2.5-hour wait time for zero to 100 per cent.

Skoda has packed the Superb with a plethora of safety and driver assistance features. The list includes Turn Assist, Crossroad Assist, Emergency Steering Assist, Exit Warning, ten airbags and Park Assist.

The new-gen Superb will be manufactured in Slovakia, sharing the plant with its step-sibling – the Volkswagen Passat.
