Stellantis Unveils STLA Medium Platform For BEVs

It will cater to various body styles in the C and D segments.

Less than two years after its EV Day presentation, Stellantis N. V. has unveiled its first of the four global BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) platforms. Called STLA Medium, it will cater to several brands under the Stallantis umbrella. The flexible architecture will underpin various body styles, specifically for the C and D segments.

What kind of body styles can the STLA Medium platform serve? According to Stellantis, the list includes cars, SUVs and crossovers. Its wheelbase can stretch between 2,700-2,900mm, while the overall body length can vary between 4.3-4.9 metres. It even has a ground clearance of over 220mm to ensure off-road capability. Also, the wheel arches can accommodate rims measuring up to 750mm in diameter.

The numbers game continues. The STLA Medium platform can deliver a range of more than 700km with a Performance pack, while a Standard pack in the mix offers over 500km (both figures are as per WLTP). The platform has space for up to 98kWh of battery and uses a 400-volt electric architecture. That will help reduce charging times and improve efficiency. The consumption can be below 14kWh for every 100km, depending on the circumstances. And connecting the vehicle to a recommended fast charger can replenish the battery from 20 to 80 per cent in 27 minutes at a rate of 2.4kWh per minute.

For propulsion, the STLA Medium platform can have a front-wheel-drive configuration and an all-wheel-drive setup. The latter comes courtesy of a second electric motor at the rear axle. As for power outputs, the BEVs will have between 215hp and 382hp.

The STLA Medium platform is also future-proof, as per Stellantis. Not only can it house lithium-ion batteries, but it is also capable of supporting future battery chemistries, including nickel- and cobalt-free and sold-state. In addition to front- and all-wheel drive setups, it can also serve a rear-drive configuration and multi-energy – covered by three scalable electric drive modules. Stellantis says the platform can be improved over the years using STLA Brain architecture, STLA SmartCockpit and STLA AutoDrive enhancements.

The company claims that up to 2 million vehicles can be produced annually using the STLA Medium platform in multiple plants. And predictably, that story will commence in Europe later this year.
