Rado has unveiled the Captain Cook Over-Pole, a 39 mm world time watch with a manual winding movement. It is a limited edition of 1,962 pieces. It is a reinterpretation of Rado’s Captain Cook Over-Pole unveiled in 2022, a model that featured a 37 mm case size. Both are inspired by a historical Rado model from 1962. It is part of the brand’s Captain Cook collection.
Key Features
Image: Abundance of details. Red date font and ruby background of the brand’s moving anchor logo provide a lovely contrast with the vintage inspired dial. Seen here with rice grain style bracelet.
Functions are hours, minutes, seconds, date, and world time.
World time function is set by synching “local time using the bezel and the 24 numbers circling the dial. Align the city with the hour hand, and the number on the dial indicates local time.”
Dial features a silver sunburst finish. The curved applied hour-markers are yellow gold-coloured. The 11 dots above the hour-markers feature vintage-white Super-LumiNova with light green luminescence. The curved hour, minute, and seconds hands are polished and yellow-gold coloured. Hour and minute hands feature vintage-white Super-LumiNova with light green luminescence.
Powered by Rado calibre R862, a manual winding movement which powers the hours, minutes, seconds, and date. Jewels: 17. Power reserve: 80 hours. The movement features an antimagnetic Nivachron hairspring and is regulated in 5 positions for greater accuracy. The movement features Côtes-de-Genève finishing, blued screws, and gold-coloured markings.
Image: Box shaped sapphire crystal. Brand’s anchor logo is embossed and laser enhanced on the crown. Seen here with vintage style brown leather strap (same as header image).
Case, bezel, and crown are made from polished, yellow gold-coloured, PVD-coated stainless steel. Case diameter: 39 mm. Thickness: 10.90 mm.
The unidirectional bezel features a polished, black, high-tech ceramic insert with laser engraved cities in gold lacquer. Watch comes with a vintage style brown leather strap attached to a polished, yellow gold-coloured, PVD-coated stainless steel pin buckle. A rice grain style bracelet is also provided. It is made from polished, yellow gold-coloured, PVD-coated stainless steel.
Our ThoughtsImage: I would love to own this. It features my country India (indicated by Mumbai), which falls in a half-time zone. One of the very few world time watches to do so.
The Captain Cook Over-Pole evokes vintage vibes because of its silver sunburst dial, yellow gold-coloured accents (dial, case and case elements, and bracelet), and box shaped sapphire crystal. Yet it features modern proportions (39 mm), a dependable movement, and an affordable price tag. It is a well-executed watch that can hold its own next to world time watches costing 20-30 times more. Rado has a winner on its hands.
