Puma Reimagines 80’s Basketball Shoe For 2022

Dubbed Slipstream, it brings back a retro look with a modern twist.

“Engineered for the serious Player”. That’s how Puma advertised the original Slipstream sneaker back in 1987. The high-top basketball shoe was the successor to the Sky LX and introduced some innovative materials in its package. That includes faux snakeskin, artificial fur and leather.

Now, 35 years after Puma launched the original version, Slipstream is back. It blends a retro look with a modern twist – something that sounds easy but is challenging to pull off. Puma says:

The next-generation Slipstream sneaker brings ‘80s basketball to the modern-day. Without compromising its performance roots, the Slipstream is a court classic reinvented.

The latest iteration has a clean and crisp look, and there’s an uncanny basketball DNA in its form. The sculpted midsole, updated overlay panels and a remodelled collar construction together deliver a contemporary feel to the overall silhouette. And best of all, the new-gen Slipstream is available in various colourways and makeups. If you’re interested, the shoe is now up for grabs in stores and on Puma’s official website.

I’ve always been a fan of retro-looking white sneakers, and Puma’s latest Slipstream shoe is something I’d like in my wardrobe. Yes, the photographs don’t justify how cool they’ll look. But, perhaps, this video featuring celebrities such as Neymar Jr, LaMelo Ball, Danna Paola, Romeo Beckham and Memphis Depay do pull them off better. Check it out!
