Porsche 911 S/T Celebrates Model’s 60th Anniversary

The special edition is the lightest derivative of the 992 generation.

If you’re not a Porsche purist, you probably won’t know this – the first-gen 911, designed and developed as the successor of the brand’s first-ever car, the 356, made its public debut at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show. Simple math reveals that this year the definitive Porsche completes 60 years. And to celebrate the 60th anniversary, the German carmaker has created what you see here – the Porsche 911 S/T.

S/T? That has been derived from a “special race version” of the first-gen 911. Dubbed 911 S, it went on sale in 1969. Internally, however, this version was called the 911 ST. The 60th-anniversary model blends aspects from two variants – the 911 GT3 RS and the 911 GT3 with Touring Package. And for that extra something, Porsche gave the 911 S/T exclusively developed lightweight components. As a result, the celebratory derivative is the lightest version of the 992 generation.

What lightweight components, you ask? The front bonnet, roof, front wings, doors, air inlets, roll cage, rear axle anti-roll bar and shear panel are made of lightweight carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP). In addition, the Porsche 911 S/T boasts magnesium wheels, the Porsche Carbon Ceramic Braking system, a lithium-ion starter battery and lightweight glass. The weight-saving goes further with a light clutch, a single-mass flywheel, a lightweight exhaust system and no rear-axle steering. The resulting DIN kerb weight of 1,380kg means it is 40kg lighter than a manual 911 GT3 Touring.

Propulsion duties have been assigned to the 4.0-litre boxer engine from the 911 GT3. In the Porsche 911 S/T, that mill comes with a 6-speed manual transmission. With 518hp on tap, the two-door coupe can hit 100kmph from nothing in 3.7 seconds and clock 300kmph flat out.

Porsche says the 911 S/T is more suited for public roads than racing tracks. The model comes equipped with a Gurney flap on the rear spoiler, 20-inch rims at the front axle, 21-inch wheels at the rear axle, “ultra-high-performance” tyres (255/35 ZR 20 front and 315/30 ZR 21 rear), CFRP bucket seats and classic green Porsche colour scheme on the clock and the instrument cluster. Buyers can opt for the four-way-adjustable Sports Seat Plus at no extra cost.

There’s also a Heritage Design Package available for the Porsche 911 S/T. That combines Shoreblu Metallic body colour with Ceramica colour on the rims. Flamboyance is furthered with decorative foil on the doors (numbers between 0 and 99). Also, the package ropes in the classic-design Porsche crest from the original 911. That is found on the hub caps, the steering wheel, the headrests, the car key and the front of the sports car. Indoors, the seat centres are in Classic Cognac with black pinstripes. Rounding off the package are a roof lining in Dinamica, dual-tone semi-aniline leather in Black/Classic Cognac leather and a few other enhancements from Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur. Lastly, the Porsche logo and the 911 S/T badges at the back of the car are in Gold.

Buyers of the limited-run version (only 1,963 units will be made) will also be offered the Chronograph 1 – 911 S/T. The timepiece follows the weight-saving recipe featuring a titanium case, uncoated and blasted. And it is operated with a rotor mimicking the magnesium wheel design of the celebratory model.
