Watches and Wonders Geneva 2024: April 9th – April 15th, 2024.

Patek Philippe has unveiled the World Time with Date reference 5330G-001 at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2024.

First launched as a limited-edition timepiece at Patek Philippe’s “Watch Art” Grand Exhibition, held in Tokyo, Japan, during June 10 – June 23, 2023, the World Time with Date reference 5330G-001 now enters the regular collection. This new reference features a “patented world first: a date display synchronized with local time”.

World timers are a part of Patek Philippe’s heritage since the 1930’s and have gone on to become horological icons. Even among the distinguished world of Patek Philippe timepieces, their world times occupy a special place. They provide Patek Philippe with a fabulous canvas, both aesthetic and horological, as demonstrated by references featuring country specific dials, grand feu cloisonné enamel dials depicting specific continents, world time with flyback chronograph, and world time with minute repeater. World Time with Date reference 5330G-001 continues this iconic legacy of Patek Philippe world timers.

Functions and Dial

The World Time with Date reference 5330G-001’s functions:

– Hours and Minutes hands displaying local time as selected by a city at 12 o’clock on the city disc.

– Depending on the local time as selected by the city at 12 o’clock, a glance at the city disc enables the owner to read the time in each of the 24-time zones.

– A patented date display synchronized with local time, as selected by the city at 12 o’clock. When the owner travels to a destination where the time is either backwards or forwards from his or her local time origin, as soon as he or she adjusts the world time (pusher at 10 o’clock) to set the new local time, the date adjusts or synchronises with new local time – all thanks to an “innovative patented differential system to manage the local-time date.”

– This patented date mechanism consists of 70 parts. (The date synchronization function is a lot more complex that this explanation, and we will keep this for a future review.)

– Corrector for date is at 8 o’clock.

Its dial comprises of four parts:

– It has an opaline-blue-gray centre dial with a “carbon” pattern.

– The faceted dauphine style hours and minutes hands are crafted in 18K white gold and feature white luminescent coating. The 13 faceted baton-style hour markers, applied on the centre dial, are crafted in 18K white gold, and feature white luminescent coating.

– Encircling the centre dial is the anti-clockwise rotating 24-hour disc, crafted in nickel silver. It serves as a day and night indicator, the day and night depending on the local time set at 12 o’clock. “Day” is indicated by the silver zone, featuring “hour numerals transfer printed in blue-gray, and a gilt sun symbol.”  “Night” is indicated by the tinted blue-gray zone, featuring “silvery hour numerals and a gilt moon symbol.”

– Encircling the 24-hour disc is the city disc, crafted in brass and tinted in a blue-gray colour. The city names are in a silvery colour. The pusher at 10 o’clock advances the city disc, one city at a time.

– Encircling the city disc is the date scale, “transfer printed in blue-grey on the beveled, silvery flange of the dial.”  The date hand is crafted in transparent mineral glass, and its hammer-shaped tip is coated in red lacquer.
