Parmigiani Fleurier has introduced the Tonda PF Sport Chronograph Rose Gold Sandstone. It joins the Tonda PF Sport collection, enhancing the Tonda PF Chronograph lineup, which includes a Watches and Wonders Geneva debut – the Tonda PF Sport Chronograph Ultra-Cermet in both London Grey and Milano Blue editions.

Left: Ultra-Cermet London Grey. Right: Ultra-Cermet Milano Blue. “Parmigiani Fleurier eschews the mainstream by introducing a groundbreaking material in luxury watchmaking. This year’s Tonda PF Chronograph Sport is entirely crafted in avant-garde material – CER for ceramic and MET for metal. Its development took three years, and it represents a world first. Cermet is a composite and scratch-resistant material combining the hardness and high-temperature resistant properties of ceramic with the lightness of metal.”
Key Features
Image: The dial features an abundance of well-executed executed details. Skeletonising the hour and minute hands creates lightness. The sand-toned counters contrasts beautifully with the guilloché dial, rose gold case, and the “Tufo” hue rubber strap. The choice of black luminescent material is a superb aesthetic touch. I applaud the absence of a date window.
Functions
Central hours and minutes. Small seconds on subdial at 6 o’clock.
Chronograph functions: 30-minute counter on subdial at 3 o’clock. 12-hour counter on subdial at 9 o’clock. Central chronograph seconds hand.
Dial
Silver dial finished in clou triangulaire guilloché. Sand-toned counters.
Skeletonised and delta shaped hour and minute hands are made from 18K rose gold and coated with black luminescent material. Chronograph (30-minute, 12-hour, and central) and small seconds hand are made from rose gold-plated steel.
Applied hour-markers are made from 18K rose gold and coated with black luminescent material.
Movement

Image: The skeletonised automatic winding rotor is made from 22K rose gold, and is polished and sandblasted. It is reminiscent of the steering wheel of the legendary Ferrari 250 GTO. Movement finishing includes satin-finished open worked bridges with bevelled edges.
Powered by PF070-CSND, a manufacture automatic movement featuring an integrated column wheel chronograph. It drives the hours, minutes, small seconds, and chronograph functions. The movement is COSC (Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres) certified.

Image: 36,000 vph or 5 Hz is a high-beat movement. Zenith’s Chronomaster Original – powered by the legendary El Primero 3600 – is another example of a watch with a 5 Hz chronograph movement.
Diameter: 30.60 mm or 13 1/2 lignes. Thickness: 6.95 mm. Parts: 288. Jewels: 42. Frequency: 36,000 vph or 5 Hz. Power reserve: 65 hours.
Case

Image: The knurled bezel is a signature design element of the brand. Notice the shape of the pushers, and the brand’s logo embossed on the crown. “The sophisticated and unconventional strap is crafted from high-grade rubber, textured, visual and tactile, each hand-finished with saddle-style stitching reflecting the Maison’s unwavering commitment to detail and excellence.
Case is made from polished and satin-finished 18K rose gold. Knurled bezel.
Diameter: 42 mm. Thickness: 12.90 mm. Crown diameter: 6.50 mm. Dial side features an ARunic anti-reflective sapphire crystal. Caseback features a sapphire crystal. Water resistant up to 100 metres. Watch comes with a “Tufo” hue high-grade rubber strap fitted to a 18K rose gold folding clasp.
Our Thoughts
Image: The Tonda PF Sport Chronograph Rose Gold Sandstone evokes the relaxed lifestyle of the Mediterranean. Its dial and counters “reflect the soft light of southern coastlines.” “The strap’s chosen colour, “Tufo”, draws inspiration from the pale volcanic stone found in Mediterranean landscapes.” The term “versatile luxury” gets thrown around a lot; this watch lives up to it.
I first covered the Tonda PF Sport Chronograph last year and was fortunate to handle the Ultra-Cermet (I think the Milano Blue edition) at Watches and Wonders Geneva during April. Judging by the images, the Tonda PF Sport Chronograph Rose Gold Sandstone is the most beautiful of them all, at least to my eyes. It evokes a luxurious and relaxed vibe, all the while hiding its high-beat chronograph movement. Not unlike that of a luxurious front-engine V8 or V12 powered GT car, perfect for long drives on scenic roads, yet inviting its owner to push the throttle when the opportunity arises.
Parmigiani Fleurier crafts beautiful watches. A few months ago, I wrote about the Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante Stainless Steel Verzasca – the brand’s interpretation of a dual time watch. The Toric Quantième Perpétuel in Rose Gold was among my top six watches from Watches and Wonders.
