Chinese EV carmaker NIO opened its first NIO Power Swap Station (PSS) in the MENA region. Located at the Yas Marina Circuit Silver 2 Car Park on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, the NIO Power Swap Station can swap a drained EV battery with a fully charged one in as little as three minutes, making it a faster process than the current fast charging architecture. Using patented Power Swap Station 3.0 technology, this rapid EV battery replacement feature is available for all NIO cars and customers across the MENA region.
On a global scale, this marks the opening of NIO’s 3,189th Power Swap Station. Occupying as many as four parking spaces, this Swap Station can automatically swap out batteries on all NIO cars without the passengers having to exit the car. The new NIO PSS 3.0 in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi is capable of holding up to 21 battery packs in its inventory and performing up to 408 battery swaps in a single day.
Before every swap, NIO claims the Power Swap Station automatically conducts an extensive and advanced system health check. This check ensures the battery motor and electric control systems are in peak condition as well as vehicle safety.
NIO customers will have access to the Power Swap Stations for the first three years of ownership with the option to extend it an extra two years. Pricing for battery swaps is straightforward and inclusive, covering both the swap and a full charge: AED 119 for 100kWh batteries and AED 99 for 75kWh batteries.
