Mercedes-Benz unveiled the new-gen GLC in SUV form last September, and its coupe-style derivatives were revealed earlier this year. Now, we’re getting into the performance-oriented category as the new GLC gains two new variants – the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 4Matic and the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S 4Matic+.
The newly introduced versions sport a more aggressive-looking design. Contributing to that is the AMG grille, AMG front apron flics, sporty air intakes and chrome-plated trim element. Similar striking changes are at the rear, with the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 boasting a diffuser look with two twin round tailpipes and the Mercedes-AMG 63 S flaunting a diffuser board with two twin trapezoidal exhaust outlets.
Indoors, AMG seats and draped in artificial leather/Microcut AMG microfibre with distinctive graphics. The Nappa leather upholstery is part of the options list, where you’ll also find the AMG Performance seats. The same material is used on the flat-bottomed steering wheel. AMG floor mats, illuminated door sill with AMG lettering, silver-coloured aluminium gearshift paddles and an MBUX system with AMG-specific displays round off the interior changes.
The Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 4Matic is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine with 416hp/500Nm. Coupled with it is a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that aids the powerplant with an additional 13hp. As a result, it can hit 100kmph from a standstill in 4.8 seconds and reach 250kmph before the electronic speed governors kick in.
The Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S 4Matic+ uses the same basic engine but with a larger turbocharger. That helps push the peak output to 469hp/545Nm, making it the world’s most powerful series-produced four-cylinder engine. In the mix, however, is a rear-mounted electric motor. Housed inside an electric drive unit, it shares the space with an electric two-speed transmission and the electronically-controlled limited-slip rear differential. The electric motor offers up to 204hp for 10 seconds. Mercedes says the maximum system output is 671hp/1,020Nm, enough to post a 0-100kmph sprint time of 3.5 seconds and an electronically-limited top speed of 275kmph.
The Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S 4Matic+ packs a 6.1kWh battery to support the electric motor. That can be replenished via the SUV’s recuperation technology or a 3.7kW charger. And yes, one could drive the GLC 63 S on electric power alone, but the range is limited to 12km.
Both versions have Mercedes’ 9-speed multi-clutch transmission, rear-axle steering and an all-wheel-drive system. The kit also includes AMG Dynamics, AMG Ride Control suspension with an adaptive damping system and AMG sports brakes, among others.
Order books for the Mercedes-AMG versions of the GLC are open. The GLC 63 S can be ordered in an exclusive ‘Edition 1’ form, offering bespoke embellishments inside-out.
