Mercedes-Maybach Adds First PHEV To The Range
It’ll be first available in China, followed by Thailand, Europe and other countries.
The S 580 e is, perhaps, the most luxurious PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) that Mercedes-Benz AG makes. That, however, isn’t true anymore. Why? Because an even more luxurious version of the S 580 e has now been created, wearing the Maybach name. What you see here is the Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e. It’s the first PHEV that has the Maybach badge.
The Maybach version of the S 580 e promises to be even quieter, especially when running on electricity alone. And, of course, the design cues exclusive to a Maybach also make the cut. For instance, the grille, the wheels, the logos (obviously!), the more generous use of chrome and the Maybach branding at the rear.
Powering the Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e is the combination of an electric motor and a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder petrol engine. The latter, all on its own, offers 367hp/500Nm, whereas the former produces 150hp/440Nm. The total system output, however, is 510hp/750Nm, enough for a 0-100kmph sprint time of 5.1 seconds and an electronically-governed top speed of 250kmph. And a smooth 9-speed automatic transmission is in the mix.
Backed by a 21.5kWh battery, the Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e can travel up to 100km (WLTP) on electric power alone. And while doing that, the maximum speed it can hit is 140kmph. The limousine comes with an 11kW AC charger as standard, which should take around two hours to fully replenish a completely drained battery. Alternatively, buyers can choose a 60kW DC charging option. That reduces the wait time to about 30 minutes.
The Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e will first go on sale in China, followed by Thailand, Europe and other countries. And what about a fully-electric Maybach? Well, that’s on the way as well. The brand confirms that a Maybach EV will be presented to the world within the current year. In all likelihood, it’ll be a more luxurious version of the EQS SUV.
