Maruti Suzuki Launches The Grand Vitara

The brand’s flagship SUV is available with mild- and strong-hybrid powertrains.

It was in July this year when Maruti Suzuki first unveiled the Grand Vitara. Now, we have the prices. The compact SUV starts at INR 10.45 lakh and goes up to INR 19.49 lakh. The dual-tone finish demands an extra INR 16,000. The brand’s flagship model, available with mild- and strong-hybrid powertrains, will be sold via the Nexa range of dealerships. But before all other details, acquaint yourself with the variant-wise price list:

People might say that the absence of a diesel engine is a disadvantage. But then, the Grand Vitara does have something that besides its step-sibling, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, no other SUV offers. And that is the choice of a strong-hybrid powertrain. It comprises a 1.5-litre petrol engine, and electric motor and a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). The internal combustion engine (ICE) produces 91bhp/122Nm, while the electric motor puts out 79bhp/141Nm. The total system output, however, is 114bhp. As for the mileage, the claimed figure is 27.97kmpl.

If the strong-hybrid is too dear, you can settle for one of the mild-hybrid variants. They have a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 48-volt internal starter generator. The powerplant outputs 102bhp/137Nm, which isn’t shabby. As for the mileage, the two-wheel- and four-wheel-drive manual (5-speed) versions can go as high as 21.11kmpl and 19.38kmpl, respectively. All derivatives with the 6-speed automatic gearbox can clock 20.58kmpl.

With the numbers game over, let’s focus on the features list. Depending on the trim level, you can get the Grand Vitara with stuff like ambient lighting, a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster, puddle lamps, ventilated front seats, a head-up display, connected-car tech and a wireless mobile charger. Other features such as cruise control, automatic climate control, auto-folding ORVMs, a panoramic sunroof, a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 360-degree camera, are also available.

Colours? You’ve got six monotone and three dual-tone options. In the former category are Nexa Blue, Arctic White, Splendid Silver, Grandeur Grey, Chestnut Brown and Opulent Red. Out of those, the silver, red and white shades can be teamed with a black roof, and those two-tone finishes are available only with Zeta+, Alpha and Alpha+ trim levels.

With the booking counter fast approaching six digits, the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara is all set to unsettle the best of opposition. In India, it will compete with the Skoda Kushaq, Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Taigun and, as mentioned above, its sibling – the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder.
