Major technological update for the Ford Transit

The world’s best-known commercial vehicle gets the latest generation of Ford infotainment and gains a number of new features for delivery drivers

It’s a king that’s determined to maintain its leadership position. The Ford Transit has now strengthened its position with a significant enhancement to its technological content. While the exterior is indeed minimal service, the large van now comes with an 8-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12-inch touchscreen, both as standard.

The Ford SYNC 4 infotainment system allows for 5G connectivity and remote updates, reducing vehicle downtime. The system can also connect to retrofitted equipment. This can be useful when the vans are transporting fresh produce, as it will be possible to constantly monitor the temperature of the refrigerated module.

Automated repetitive tasks

But the biggest innovation is the arrival of Delivery Assist 6, available on long-wheelbase electric E-Transits and on Transit models with automatic gearboxes. This feature automates the repetitive tasks faced by delivery drivers: when the gearbox is in Park, the engine cuts out, the hazard warning lights are activated and the doors that the driver has previously indicated are locked. A simple press on the brake pedal restarts the engine and switches off the hazard lights.

A new transmission for improved load capacity

A new eight-speed automatic gearbox is now available on Transit models with front-wheel drive. Lighter and more efficient, this transmission optimises the vehicle’s total laden weight, which is now 4,250 kg instead of 3,550 kg. The maximum permissible weight on the front axle has also been increased, from 1,850 kg to 2,000 kg. This will save time when it comes to distributing the vehicle’s load.

Available to order at the end of the month

When it comes to driving aids, the Transit is equipped like a prince, with features such as Level 2 semi-autonomous driving, blind spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert and automatic parking with 360° camera. The order book for the “new” ICE and electric Ford Transit will open at the end of July, with the first deliveries scheduled for the summer of 2024.
