Lexus is unveiling new enhancements to the LX series, announcing the launch of its new electrified vehicle. This LX 700h represents a qualitative addition to its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality, as it combines a newly developed hybrid system with the reliability, durability, and off-road performance that Lexus LX vehicles have always been famous for.
The LX was first launched in 1996 as a luxury sports utility vehicle. The new LX 700h, equipped with a hybrid system for the first time, significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions while maintaining the reliability and versatility that customers expect.
For 2021, the Lexus LX underwent a complete makeover based on the Lexus Driving Style concept; however, this model posed a challenge within the Lexus lineup as it was the only model not offered an electrified option. Therefore, a hybrid system was developed in parallel with the previous series, along with an update to the New Global Architecture-F (GA-F) platform.
The newly developed hybrid drivetrain features an electric motor with a 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine, mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission, ensuring a seamless transition between engine and electric motor operation. This system maintains core features, such as the permanent all-wheel drive system and a low-range gearbox supporting the torque converter that helps the vehicle deliver a responsive and enjoyable driving experience.
An innovative cross-member was explicitly designed to support the additional weight of the hybrid drivetrain while maintaining a low centre of gravity for enhanced stability. The rear engine mount has also been upgraded for enhanced durability, while a redesigned spare tyre helps optimise battery positioning without affecting the track angle.
Embodying Lexus’ commitment to achieving a carbon-neutral society and establishing the concept of “coexistence between man, nature, and mobility,” the LX series offers the OVERTRAIL model, designed specifically for adventure enthusiasts looking for a bold design. The front and rear differential locks complement the standard central locking, increasing off-road and terrain capability.
Regarding safety, the car is equipped with the Lexus Safety System+, which includes the Proactive Driving Assist (PDA) system. This system anticipates hazards such as pedestrians and unexpected obstacles, providing timely braking or steering support. The Pre-Collision Safety System (PCS) can detect potential collisions and provide warnings or automatic braking. The Driver Behaviour Response System monitors the driver’s behaviour and activates safety measures such as hazard warning lights, gradual deceleration, emergency service contact when needed, and other systems.
