To bolster its position in Africa, Kia has opened a new assembly plant in Ghana with its official distributor in the country – Rana Motors. The inauguration event, which took place on May 2, 2023, was attended by H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana, Hon. Michael Okyere Baafi, Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry of Ghana and Hon. Henry Quartey, Regional Minister of Ghana, among other notable leaders from the country.
The plant is located in Amasaman town and captures real estate measuring 65,000 sq.m. Out of the lot, the building area occupies 16,000 sq. m., including 1,000 sq. m. of living area. At the moment, the plant can assemble 35,000 vehicles. But plans are in place to double that figure. The facility is the region’s largest assembly plant.
Kia confirms the Ghana plant currently produces six models – Cerato, K5, Sonet, Seltos, Sportage and Sorento. Soon, that count will increase to ten, with K2700, K3000, Carens and Picanto joining the list. Also, the plant follows a sustainable energy approach, focusing on natural light, ventilation systems and heat insulation to minimise energy consumption. In the next phase, the facility will get solar panels on its roof, covering all its energy requirements.
