Jaipur Watch Company has unveiled The Royal Baagh collection. “Baagh” is the Hindi word for tiger, and this new collection is “inspired by the elegance of India’s royal courts and the symbolism of the tiger.” The tiger symbolises magnificence, strength, and protector.
Founded by Gaurav Mehta in 2013, Jaipur Watch Company – as its name suggests – is based in Jaipur, India, and crafts watches that “fuse cultural storytelling with horological precision.” The brand is renowned for its coin watches, drawing on Mr. Mehta’s passion of collecting vintage coins. In addition to watches that incorporate historical stamps and honour famous artists (to name a few), they also specialise in bespoke watches.

Our Thoughts
It is not easy for watchmaking startups to establish themselves, more so in India where a Swiss-style horological ecosystem does not exist. Also, Mr. Mehta does not come from a watchmaking background. Rather, he has a background in insurance and risk management. Despite all odds, Jaipur Watch Company has come a long way since its founding. They have made a mark for themselves in India’s competitive and growing watch retail landscape. The brand operates an online and boutique retail model across India.
The Royal Baagh collection’s case is the brand’s equivalent of metiers d’art craftsmanship in look, though not in execution. Ornate cases such as those crafted by prestigious Swiss brands are hand engraved, typically require hundreds of hours to complete, and exorbitantly priced.

Image: Cultural symbolism on the wrist. The tiered lugs is a lovely design feature.
The Royal Baagh collection evokes a historical and cultural aspect of India in an affordable watch. It highlights Jaipur Watch Company’s confidence to take aesthetic risks. It will appeal to collectors who appreciate culturally infused bold watches. I look forward to seeing The Royal Baagh collection and other watches by the brand in the flesh and doing a hands-on review.
