Reverso Tribute Duoface Tourbillon

First image: Front or recto dial. Second image: Front or recto dial partially open. Third image: Reverse or verso dial partially open. Tourbillon with two faces.

Key features of the Reverso Tribute Duoface Tourbillon include:

“Originally developed in 1994, the Reverso Duoface concept is defined by two contrasting dials, each displaying a different time zone and operated by a single mechanism. The creation of the Reverso Tribute Duoface Tourbillon was driven by the desire to combine the Duoface concept with a tourbillon visible on both dials, without adding thickness to the calibre.”

“To achieve this, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s engineers had to completely re-think the tourbillon mechanism. They dispensed with the upper bridge that normally supports a tourbillon, replaced the outer tourbillon cage with a peripheral ball-bearing system and used the Maison’s patented S-shaped hairspring so that the spring and balance wheel could be fixed at the centre of the tourbillon. As a result, Calibre 847 is only 3.9 mm thick, and the entire watch is only 9.14 mm thick.”

Functions:

Front or recto dial: Central hours and minutes. Tourbillon at 6 o’clock.

Reverse or verso dial: Off centre hours and minutes of a second time zone. Day and night indicator between 1 and 2 o’clock. Anti-clockwise small seconds scale on the tourbillon cage visible at 6 o’clock.

Dial:

Front or recto dial: Charcoal grey sunburst dial. Dauphine hour and minute hands. 13 applied trapezoidal hour-markers (2 for 12 o’clock). A Chemin de fer minute track occupies the outer dial, graduated in increments of 5 minutes each. “Jaeger-LeCoultre” and the brand’s logo (applied) at 12 o’clock.

Reverse or verso dial: Silver sunburst dial, partially open-worked, with hand guilloché , featuring a Clous de Paris pattern, affixed to the main dial with two screws. The tourbillon bridge at 6 o’clock “required 232 lines of guilloché work, representing 1,392 gestures.” 12 visible blued screws offer a lovely contrast with the dial.

“The edges of the bridges are hand-bevelled, and their surfaces decorated with a hand-guilloché Clous de Paris, from Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Métiers RaresTM atelier, pattern to create a beautiful play of light and shadow.”

Off centre dial: Dauphine hour and minute hands. 10 applied trapezoidal hour-markers (2 for 12 o’clock). A circular minute track encircles this dial, graduated in increments of 5 minutes each. “Jaeger-LeCoultre” and the brand’s logo displayed at 12 o’clock.

Movement: Powered by manual-winding Jaeger-LeCoultre calibre 847, which powers the hours, minutes, small seconds, tourbillon, second time zone and day and night indicator. 3.90 mm thickness. 254 parts. 31 jewels. Frequency 21,600 vph or 3 Hz. 1 barrel. Power reserve 38 hours.

Case: Made from stainless steel. Dimensions: Length 45.50 mm * Width 27.40 mm * Thickness 9.14 mm. Both the front and reverse side feature a sapphire crystal. Water resistance 3 bar or approximately 30 metres.

Strap and Buckle:

Comes with 2 straps – Grey Casa Fagliano calfskin leather strap and a black alligator leather strap.

The watch features an interchangeable strap mechanism. Lug width is 20 mm. The double folding buckle is made from stainless steel. Buckle width is 18 mm.

Reverso Tribute Duoface Small Seconds

Left: Front or recto dial. Right: Reverse or verso dial. A precious metal dress watch with two faces.

Key features of the Reverso Tribute Duoface Small Seconds include:

Functions:

Front or recto dial: Central hours and minutes. Small seconds at 6 o’clock.

Reverse or verso dial: Off centre hours and minutes of a second time zone. 24-hour display (serves as a day and night indicator) at 6 o’clock.

Dial:

Front or recto dial: Dark blue lacquer sunburst dial.

“On the front dial, creating a rich and eye-catching contrast with the warmth of the pink gold case and matching indexes and hands, the deep, inky blue was achieved by applying no fewer than 20 layers of lacquer, each of which had to be meticulously dried before applying the next layer. In all, creation of the dial was a process of 50 steps.”

Reverse of verso dial: Silvery-grey sunburst dial. 11 applied hour-markers. Off centre dial: Dauphine hour and minute hands. Features a black circular minute track, graduated in increments of 5 minutes each. “Jaeger-LeCoultre” and the brand’s logo displayed at 12 o’clock. 24-hour display at 6 o’clock: Indicated by a dauphine hand. Features a black circular hour track, graduated in increments of 1 hour each.

Movement: Powered by manual-winding Jaeger-LeCoultre calibre 854, which powers the hours, minutes, small seconds, second time zone and 24-hour display. 3.80 mm thickness. 160 parts. 19 jewels. Frequency 21,600 vph or 3 Hz. 1 barrel. Power reserve 42 hours.

Case: Made from 18K pink gold 750/1000. Dimensions: Length 47.00 mm * Width 28.30 mm * Thickness 9.613 mm. Both the front and reverse side feature a sapphire crystal. Water resistance 3 bar or approximately 30 metres.

“To maintain the integrity of the case design, the second time zone is adjusted by a small slider set into the top case-band and completely invisible except when the case is released from the cradle to be flipped over.”

Strap and Buckle:

Comes with 2 straps – Both blue Casa Fagliano calfskin leather straps, one dark blue and the other light blue.

The watch features an interchangeable strap mechanism. Lug width is 20 mm. The pin buckle is made from 18K pink gold 750/1000. Buckle width is 18 mm.

Our Thoughts

Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Reverso has its roots in 1930 – 1931. It was a special request from a British Army Officer stationed in India (India was a British Colony until 1947) to a visiting Swiss businessman, for a robust watch that would survive the game of Polo. Polo was a popular sport among British gentry at the time. Jaeger-LeCoultre – “LeCoultre” – back then – answered with the Reverso, a rectangular watch featuring a patented reversible case, allowing its owner to reverse or flip the case over, protecting the dial from harm’s way. The Reverso, essentially a 1930’s designed “robust sports watch” went on to become a horological icon over the decades that followed. It is fair to say the Reverso is the flagship collection of Jaeger-LeCoultre. It is much more than a sports watch. In fact, the Reverso of today is not a sports watch.

Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Reverso collection has included and includes simple time-only watches, complications (such as dual time, day and night indicator, moonphase, chronograph), grand complications (such as perpetual calendar, tourbillon, and minute repeater), artwork (miniature enamel) and jewellery pieces – to name a few. It is one of the greatest watch families in the world. One of the best things about it is that it includes “something for everyone”, depending on one’s tastes and budget. Entry into the world of Jaeger-LeCoultre, whether Reverso or some of their other collections, is not so steep. As they are literally a 100% in-house brand, known as the watchmaker’s watchmaker, they can offer high calibre watchmaking often at (relatively) affordable prices.

The four new models enhance the Reverso Tribute collection and offer greater choice for collectors.

The Reverso Tribute Monoface, either of the two dial versions, is a perfect two-hander watch, with the option to personalise its caseback. Its new case size will equally appeal to both men and women collectors. It is relatively affordable, and an excellent entry point for a collector looking to buy their first haute-horology watch. A great watch to have in any collection.

The Reverso Tribute Duoface Tourbillon is Jaeger-LeCoultre’s interpretation of the tourbillon in a Reverso case – a grand complication with two faces. Very few watch brands come close to Jaeger-LeCoultre’s expertise in grand complications. In stainless steel it offers another option for high end collectors.

The Reverso Tribute Duoface Small Seconds in an 18K rose gold case is a beautiful interpretation of a precious metal dress watch, showcasing a three-hander on a gorgeous dark blue lacquer sunburst dial (front side), and second time zone with 24-hour display on a silvery-grey sunburst dial (reverse side). Two faces, almost like two watches, as only the Reverso can do. It will appeal to collectors who love precious metal dress watches.

Each of these four Reverso Tribute watches is a winner. I love all four. My favourite is the Reverso Tribute Monoface with silvery-grey opaline dial or blue lacquer sunburst dial. It is a versatile watch perfect for all occasions.
