Here we go again….This time, It’s Spiderman!

Introducing the newly launched Royal Oak Concept

Back in 2021, Audemars Piguet (AP) started a collaboration with Marvel and the first watch launched was the Black Panther Flying Tourbillon Royal Oak Concept, which was in a way a tribute to Chadwick Boseman (Wakanda Forever!).

2 years down the line, Audemars Piguet has launched a new one – The Royal Oak Concept “Spiderman Tourbillon”.

This is a limited edition of 250 pieces that comes in two versions, one is in titanium and the other is 18-carat white gold (this is definitely a limited edition, but the exact number is not provided). For both, the dial is 42mm and has a thickness of 14.6mm, but unlike the earlier Black Panther version, this is an open-work dial. Of course, the highlight is the Spiderman placed in the centre of the watch. The Spiderman has been handcrafted with very minute intricate details etched which showcases AP’s workmanship. Since this is an open-work dial, it does feel that the Spiderman is floating in the middle (actually, looks like it’s swinging in the centre of the watch which is cool!). When I look at both, I feel that the black Spiderman looks way better than the coloured version, as I think the coloured one looks out of place, but again, this is my perspective.

The timepiece comes with the new calibre 2974 which is hand-wound and offers 50 metres of water resistance. The dial has white gold-hour markers and hands with a luminescent coating that shines brightly along with Spiderman’s eyes (Damn, that’s amazing). The watch comes with a black and grey rubber strap as well as a titanium AP buckle. There is also an additional strap that is red and black in colour. In addition to the difference in the Spidey colours between the two versions, the white gold one comes with an engraved gold case and black ceramic bezel which elevates it to another level. The titanium version is considered to be priced at over US$ 200,000.

I cannot deny that I am a big fan of Marvel and am always happy to see watch collaborations with Marvel, however, I was surprised with this release. I always thought that Black Panther was a one-off collaboration (I could be biased here as I am a Black Panther fan) and wasn’t expecting another one, so for now, I have mixed feelings about the AP Spiderman release – I definitely like the white gold version more than the titanium. It will be interesting to see where Audemars Piguet goes from here with the Marvel collaboration. As always, I would like to end with my question, what do you think of the new Spiderman Tourbillon release from AP?
