It was in 2002 when Emirates started operating flights between Dubai and Mauritius. The following year, the Dubai-based carrier entered a strategic partnership with Air Mauritius, which has grown to provide travellers with various benefits such as codeshare, cargo handling, and cooperative frequent flyer programmes.
Both airlines have now inked a fresh MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) that enhances and renews their longstanding strategic ties. The enhancement comes in the codeshare and agreement, which now covers more routes. The partnership allows Air Mauritius to place its code on Emirates-operated services to six destinations: Cairo, Colombo, Karachi, Dammam, Jeddah, and Riyadh. On the other hand, Emirates can place its code on services operated by Air Mauritius to Antananarivo. The partnership also allows Mauritius’ flag carrier to sell seats to points on Emirates’ entire network on an interline basis.
Emirates, which operates 14 weekly flights between its home hub and Mauritius aboard an Airbus A380, has ferried more than 8.8 million passengers and over 126 thousand tonnes of cargo on flights to and from the island nation since 2002. The business ties between the two airlines have generated annual benefits worth USD 900 million to Mauritius: USD 119 million in direct contribution from Emirates’ weekly passenger flights; USD 264 million in tourism receipts; and USD 530 million from tourism-related spending. And to support the operations, 3,600 jobs were created in Mauritius.
