What is the Bugatti W16 Mistral ‘Caroline’?
The ‘Caroline’ is a one-off version of the Bugatti W16 Mistral, created through the brand’s Sur Mesure programme. It is based on the open-top Mistral, which also marks the final road-going Bugatti powered by the W16 engine.
Named after the owner’s daughter, this car focuses on personalisation and pure customisation, unlike anything ever seen before on a Bugatti. The Caroline is an already rare hypercar turned into a unique commission.
Does the Mistral Caroline Use The Same W16 Engine?
The mechanical package remains unchanged. The Mistral Caroline continues to use Bugatti’s 8.0-litre quad-turbocharged W16 engine, producing around 1,600hp. As the last roadster to feature this engine, the Mistral represents the peak of Bugatti’s legendary W16 engine.
Its open-top layout also offers a more direct experience of the W16 and its infamous turbo spool ‘Whooosh’ noises.
Design Inspiration & Development Process
Bugatti’s Molsheim headquarters and its Berlin design studio, led by the Colour & Material Finish (CMF) team, partnered to develop the ‘Caroline.’
The process involved extensive sampling and testing, particularly for the Lavender paint. Multiple iterations were evaluated under different lighting conditions to ensure consistency across the car’s unique sculpted shape.
The floral theme draws from natural landscapes such as Provence’s lavender fields and refined influences from haute couture, resulting in a design language that’s quite unique.
What Does The Bugatti Mistral Caroline Look Like?
The ‘Caroline’ specification introduces a bespoke “Lavender” paint, developed specifically for this car. The finish shifts subtly depending on lighting, moving between cooler violet tones and warmer highlights.
The lower body features exposed ‘Violet Carbon,’ adding contrast while maintaining a cohesive colour theme. At the rear, the retractable wing carries a hand-painted floral design with lilac and iris gradients, along with the ‘Caroline’ script. Rear Wing Artwork: A Moving Canvas
One of the most intricate elements of the car is the rear wing, which doubles as an air brake. The artwork applied here is created through a multi-stage masking and painting process, where each colour layer is carefully applied and protected before the next is added.
This builds depth into the final finish, giving the floral design a subtle three-dimensional effect. The full composition is only revealed when the wing is deployed, adding a dramatic visual when the brakes are activated at speeds over 200km/h.

The cabin follows the same colour theme with a combination of Blanc and Minuit leather, complemented by purple accents and carbon fibre elements. Floral motifs are integrated through detailed embroidery across the seats and door panels, created using layered stitching techniques.
The headrests feature mirrored designs, while the centre console houses Bugatti’s signature “Dancing Elephant” gear selector, enclosed in tinted glass that matches the overall colour scheme.

Bugatti’s Sur Mesure programme allows customers to go beyond standard configuration options and create fully bespoke vehicles. This includes custom colours, materials, embroidery, and unique design elements developed in collaboration with Bugatti’s design and engineering teams. While the standard Mistral is priced at around $5 million, bespoke commissions through Sur Mesure typically add a significant premium depending on the level of customisation. Expect this particular car to cost way above that sticker price.
