Bowers & Wilkins 800 Series Diamond D5: All you need to know before it goes on sale

• Bowers & Wilkins unveils the 800 Series Diamond D5 in its 60th anniversary year, marking the fifth generation of its Diamond Dome tweeter range. • Seven models span the lineup, from the GBP 10,000 805 D5 standmount to the flagship GBP 43,000 801 D5 floorstander. • New technologies include Space Frame Bracing, tuned-mass damping, an Enhanced Matrix system, and Signature-spec components throughout.

Sixty years after John Bowers founded his namesake audio company, Bowers & Wilkins has unveiled the fifth generation of its most celebrated loudspeaker range. Notably, the Bowers & Wilkins 800 Series Diamond D5 is not a cosmetic refresh. Instead, it is a thorough engineering overhaul that builds on the 800 Series D4 Signature and advances on its predecessor across performance, design, and finish. Sales open on 9th September. Here is everything you need to know.

The range comprises seven models: the two-way 805 D5 standmount, four three-way floorstanders (804 D5, 803 D5, 802 D5, and the flagship 801 D5) and two centre-channel speakers (HTM81 D5 and HTM82 D5) for home theatre use. Prices start at GBP 10,000 for the 805 D5 and reach GBP 43,000 for the 801 D5.

What are the new technologies?

The Bowers & Wilkins 800 Series Diamond D5 targets residual sources of mechanical noise and distortion that its predecessor left unresolved. Moreover, the most significant addition is Space Frame Bracing, parallel aluminium rails that bolt to the rear of the existing Matrix enclosure, stiffening the cabinet wall and reducing vibration-borne resonance.

Building on this, the Enhanced Matrix adds thick aluminium sections around each drive unit aperture at the front of the cabinet. Furthermore, together with an all-new, more precisely coupled aluminium top plate, the D5 enclosure is the most mechanically inert design Bowers & Wilkins has produced. Additionally, all floorstanding models further receive a revised aluminium plinth with constrained-layer and tuned-mass damping, each tuned mass individually specified to its plinth. Stabilising outriggers now sit within the plinth rather than protruding, keeping the design clean without compromising stability.

How has the 804 D5 changed?

Beyond the shared cabinet upgrades, the 804 D5 receives one of the most significant model-specific changes in the range. It now houses an internal aluminium enclosure for its Continuum Cone FST midrange assembly, derived from the Turbine Head structure used in the headed models above it. Consequently, it produces a spatial presentation that closely matches a true-headed loudspeaker, while retaining its traditional external aesthetic as the most discreet floorstander in the range.

What Signature components carry over?

Across the board, every Bowers & Wilkins 800 Series Diamond D5 model ships with lower-distortion motor systems on all drive units, the latest Diamond Dome tweeter grille mesh, improved crossover components, higher-quality wiring harnesses, and aluminium-mounted crossover plates coupled to both the cabinet and Space Frame. Together, these improve resolution, transient response, off-axis performance, and dynamics across the entire range.

What finishes are available?

On the design side, Satin Rosenut exits the portfolio; however, it is replaced by Dark Walnut, inspired by the limited-run 801 Abbey Road Limited Edition, with dark metal detailing and black Leather by Connolly trim. Additionally, Stealth Black offers a second dark option with consistent tones across all surfaces. However, Warm White arrives with warmer tones and champagne-coloured metalwork, and Light Walnut completes the range with matching champagne detailing.

Additionally, the brand has tightened manufacturing tolerances throughout. Furthermore, with the introduction of the Bowers & Wilkins 800 Series Diamond D5, there are narrower panel gaps, hidden fixings, more seamless surface transitions, and a refined paint process, most visible on the Stealth Black cabinets. Every loudspeaker is hand-assembled at the company’s facility in Worthing, UK.
