Japan Airlines aims to replace its Boeing 737-800 fleet with the newer 737-8 aircraft. This intention resulted in a firm order for 21 examples of the latter in March 2023. Now, a second order for the same aircraft type and variant has been agreed upon between the two firms. It is for seventeen additional 737-8s, bringing the orderbook of the aircraft type to 38.
With the 737-8, the airline will also introduce the Boeing Sky Interior. That includes modern-day LED lighting, larger windows, and roomy overhead bins to improve the flying experience. Furthermore, the 737-8 is not only more frugal but also kinder to the environment, with up to a 15 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to the 737-800. The operational commonality will also play a crucial role in deploying the new aircraft. Japan Airlines has been an operator of the Boeing 737 for nearly five decades.
Japan Airlines was among the first operators to induct and deploy Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. Other Boeing jets in the carrier’s fleet include 767s, 777s, and 737-800s.
