ATP Shanghai: Hurkacz beats Rublev to win the second Masters 1000 of his career
The Polish beat the Russian in three sets (6-3, 3-6, 7-6) in the Shanghai final
This Sunday, on the Chinese night of Shanghai, it was Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, ranked 17th in the world, who walked away with the title. In a tightly contested match, he beat world No. 7 Andrey Rublev 6-3 / 3-6 / 7-6. With this success in the final of the Rolex Shanghai Masters, Hurkacz wins his second Masters 1000 title.
At 6-5 in his favor, it was Andrey Rublev who had the first match point of the tie-break. But in the end, it was Hubert Hurkacz who could exult after winning the third-set deciding game, 10-8. And it’s the symbol of this final: balanced and hotly contested opposition, with two gladiators returning blows for blows. In the first two sets, each dominated his set. The Pole won the first, the Russian the second.
All in all, both players delivered a great performance, resulting in a spectacular final. Over the course of the match, both players passed more than 70% of their first balls, which is very good. At the same time, neither player committed a single double-fault, which is rare enough to warrant mention. Rublev and Hurkacz are known for having games full of offense and initiative when they’re at their best, and today they proved it. The Russian finished the match with a total of 42 winners (and only 8 unforced errors), while the Pole had 44 winners (and only 7 unforced errors). Both were also more at ease at the net: Rublev won 14 points out of a possible 18, compared to Hurkacz’s 15 out of 19.
