ATP 500 – Vienna: Jannik Sinner beats Medvedev in the final to win his 4th title of the season

The Italian wins in three sets against the Russian (7-6, 4-6, 6-3)

On this Sunday afternoon, Jannik Sinner, world No. 4, denied Russia’s Daniil Medvedev, world No. 3, a chance for revenge. After a three-hour battle, it was the Italian who prevailed in the final of the Vienna indoor tournament, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.

Bis repetita! As in the ATP 500 tournament in Beijing two weeks ago, Sinner and Medvedev faced off this afternoon in the final of the Vienna tournament. And, as in China, the Italian triumphed over the Russian. These two victories in the final are Sinner’s only two victories against Medvedev. The Russian now leads only 6-2. At the Wiener Stadthalle, the 3rd and 4th ranked players in the ATP rankings battled it out. In the end, it was the one with the hungrier face who prevailed. For most of the match, Sinner was aggressive, enterprising and, above all, impressive. In all, the Italian hit 36 winners to 22 unforced errors. He was also able to vary his game, with many of his shots coming to the net. Daniil Medvedev also played a fine final. He often relied on his great first ball (13 aces). His defense, counter-attacking and ball length also brought him many points (26 winners, 23 unforced errors).

With this latest title, 22-year-old Italian Janiik Sinner wins his 4th title in 2023 (Montpellier, Toronto, Beijing, Vienna). While it’s not over yet, it’s already the best season of his career.
