Whenever we hear the words endurance racing, LeMans comes to our mind. It’s probably the most gruelling race in the world which requires the maximum performance from the drivers and their car. And when a LeMans winning car is for sale, then we are all ears!
Meet the LeMans winner you might not have heard about but is a big part of racing ‘eritage – the 2007 Porsche RS Spyder. It has two outright and four class wins in the American Le Mans Series to its name and a gorgeous DHL livery on its body. Only 17 RS Spyders were built between 2005 and 2008 and this one got the spotlight as it played a pivotal role in Penske Racing’s 2007 and 2008 ALMS Championship Seasons.
Under the bonnet it has an old school Direct Fuel Injection 3,397 CC Type MR6 DOHC 90° 3.4-litre V8 that puts out around 500 horsepower and redlines at 10,000rpm. The engine is mated to a 6-Speed Electro Pneumatic Semi Automatic Sequential Gearbox.
The consignor who owns two more RS Spyders along with this one (lucky chap!) describes this 9R6.702 as an “extremely exciting and remarkably user-friendly prototype racing car.
This car has never been up for public sale but now it will be available to buy at Gooding and Company’s Pebble Beach Auction. The price? It could reach its new home for an estimated $6,000,000 – $8,000,000.
Now I wish I could buy that!
It’s a lesser-known Porsche but so so desirable once you see the car’s livery and get to know its racing history
