Airbus Reveals A New Aircraft Deal With Air Niugini

Details of the latest deal surface as the airline’s first A220 entered final assembly.

The national carrier of Papua New Guinea, Air Niugini, and Airbus have revealed details of a fresh aircraft deal. The agreement is for a firm order of two more A220-100 single-aisle jets. It is the second direct order from the airline that Airbus has bagged, with a six-aircraft order, comprising the same type and variant, in 2023 being the first. Furthermore, Air Niugini has inked lease agreements for three A220-300s from Azorra, a US-based aircraft lessor.

The details of the latest deal between Airbus and Air Niugini surfaced as the latter’s first A220 entered the final assembly line at the former’s facilities in Mirabel, Canada. The aircraft family in question is, per its manufacturer, “the most modern airliner in its size category”. An Airbus A220 can ferry between 100 and 160 passengers for up to 3,600 nautical miles (6,700 km) nonstop. Depending on the configuration, the A220-100 caters to the 100-135 seat market space, while its larger sibling, the A220-300, has been designed to serve the 120-160 seat market.

Powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF engines, the Airbus A220 promises a 25 per cent reduction in carbon emissions and fuel consumption per seat over the previous generation aeroplane. Airbus has received more than 900 orders from over 30 operators for the A220. Of the lot, over 410 units are now with their takers.
