To provide smoother end-to-end itineraries to its passengers travelling to Australia, Air India has entered a new codeshare partnership with Virgin Australia. This unilateral agreement allows Air India to place its code “AI” on Virgin Australia flights. Passengers flying with the Indian airline from Delhi to Melbourne or Sydney can take Virgin Australia flights to 16 destinations across Australia and New Zealand. Moreover, travellers with codeshare tickets won’t have to reclaim their baggage, as it will be checked in for the entire journey.
So, which 16 cities are part of this one-sided codeshare partnership? The list includes Adelaide, Ballina/Byron Bay, Brisbane, Cairns, Canberra, Darwin, Gold Coast, Hamilton Island, Hobart, Launceston, Melbourne, Newcastle, Perth, Queenstown (New Zealand), Sunshine Coast, and Sydney.
Air India presently operates 14 weekly nonstop flights comprising two routes: Delhi-Melbourne and Delhi-Sydney. The carrier uses a Boeing 787 Dreamliner to ferry passengers on both routes. The aircraft is split into two cabins, boasting 18 flat beds in Business Class and 238 seats in Economy. The codeshare flights start from February 18, 2025.
