For the upcoming summer, Air India has announced additional flights on some of its network’s most sought-after routes originating from three cities in north India. The airline has also shared an update on how the retrofitting programme is progressing to bring its legacy aircraft in line with the latest design and standards.
Starting with the UK, Air India will operate three additional weekly flights on its Delhi-London Heathrow connection. A combination of A350-900 and upgraded Boeing 787-9 aircraft will help increase the weekly flight count from 21 to 24. The airline will also operate four weekly flights, up from three, on the Amritsar-Birmingham and Amritsar-London Gatwick routes. Similarly, the Ahmedabad-London Gatwick connection will operate five times per week, up from three.
Two more routes in Europe – Delhi-Zurich and Delhi-Vienna – will receive a flight frequency boost. Air India will offer five weekly flights on the former route (up from four) and four weekly services on the latter connection (up from three).
In Asia, the airline will increase the weekly flight count on the Delhi-Seoul (Incheon) route from four to five. Another confirmed change is a swap of aircraft on the Delhi-Hong Kong route. Instead of an Airbus A321, Air India will deploy a Boeing 787 on seven-weekly services. One route to Africa—Delhi-Nairobi—will see a frequency increase from three to four weekly.
Regarding upgrading its fleet to align with modern-day design and standards, Air India confirms it will complete the process for its narrowbodies by mid-2025. In April this year, the first legacy Boeing 787 will take a break from service for the retrofitting programme. It should re-enter service in October 2025. After that, the airline will put 2-3 Boeing 787s through the same upgrade process every month until all 27 have been completed.
Due to production constraints at the chosen seat supplier, the interior overhaul for the Boeing 777 fleet will now start early next year. It was supposed to commence in 2025. Because aircraft will be undergoing the retrofitting process, they will remain out of service for a while. As a result, Air India has decided to suspend its direct Mumbai-Melbourne service from March 30 to September 13, 2025, and the non-stop Kochi-London Gatwick flight from March 30, 2025, until further notice.
